I apologize if this question had been answered previously.
I received a DVD disc (DVD +RW) from a friend of mine that I am unable to play in any of DVD players. My home stereo player (a Sony DVP-650) says there is no disc inserted. When I try to play the disc using the WinXP media player in my computer DVD player, (an NEC 2510), brings up the menu screen but when i try to play a chapter, it displays the exclamation amrk next to each chapter as it cycles through them, only playing the last chapter with an error message saying that it can't play the disc. I am, however, intermittently able to view the contents of the disc in Windows Explorer. I tried copying the files to my hard drive and re-burning them on one of my dvd discs that I know works on all my players- but I have the same problem.
In looking at the contents of the disc the other day, I noticed that next to the "vob" files, it says "nero Showtime 2 file". I assumed that that meant the discs were burned using Nero. So, I opened the Showtime 2 player in WIndows, and to my surprise, the DVD played fine - but it doesn't play anywhere else.
Would someone please enlighten me as to what is causing this problem? I'm grateful that I am able to play the disc on my computer, but I would really like to play it on my home entertainment system.
thanks.

not at all standalone players can play rewritables, even my players wouldn't play them after booktyping to dvd-rom format...
for me/us to properly analyse this, can you pls provide LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log (this is provided the last thing in your log was from when you reburnt the rewritable to this new disc) or just make sure to provide the section of log pertaining to the burning of that last disc...
Nero logs provide a very good insight into a system's settings for burning, so generally analysing a logfile can get people up and burning quite quickly...

I'm 99% sure that this is the log of the disc that I burned from the discs I received. I was mistkane about one thing though. The disc I received is a Memorex "DVD +R" I think previouslt I thought it was a "DVD +RW" which is incorrect.
Please let me know what you think. As I mentioned before the VOB and ifo files on the disc are listed as "Nero SHowtime" files. I was thinking that that was maybe causing the problem, but I'm not sure.
thanks again.

Hi creaky,
ok, lets see how I did. After looking on the net, I found that the "IdeChnDr " you mentioned earlier has to do with the Intel Application Accelerator. I had to uninstall that before installing the Nero update. I was unable to find where I turn on the DMA for the drives, and I didn't have an "Advanced" tab in the "Properties" of the DVD Player, and if this program was installed, there wasn't the advanced tab so I uninstalled it(it didn't make a difference I don't think). So, now DMA is enabled, except for where it lists the "generic DVD player". I don't what that is. I only have the DVD Player, so I'm not sure what that is.
I updated the firmware on the burner, as per your suggestion. However, in the log file (pasted below), it still only lists one line.
So, after doing these things, I tried burned the dvd again, and the result was pretty much the same, the only difference was that it was able to play the disc, but really slowly, and lots of freeze frames - I eventually gave up because it seemed like it was just sitting there.
ANyway, please let me know what you think. I wanted to mention again, that before I received this disc, I never had a problem playing or burning a dvd. It is only this disc that I am unable to play, and even if I copy the files tomy hard drive and burn it onto one of my discs, I get the same result.

that'll teach me - i didn't do any searching for "IdeChnDr ", otherwise i'd have known ut was the pesky Intel Application Accelerator, and all i seem to see about that is people recommended to ditch the blessed thing!. (i've heard of it, just not heard of the drivers being called "IdeChnDr ").
just having a look at the log now

ok, have read the rest of your reply/been thru the log, and you're right, Quote: Recorder: _NEC DVD_RW ND-2510A, Media type: DVD+R
- still only 1 line.
Thus the media has to be newer than your firmware knows what to do with. All i can think of here is for you to download dvd identifier (free) from here - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id... and 'identify' that disc from the log, and paste here. That's not gonna help you burn but we can verify more about the disc...

yup. i'm no Ritek expert but those look like 4x discs to me, either way i dunno why your firmware can't deal with 'em. i'll go PM gurnard, he's a Ritek man, t'would be better than me cheating and doing a google search...

@ stosh hi :)
@creaky hi :)
shit comp! don't know if you got my PM so will repeat here just in case
G05 should be ok.
haven't had any experience of +R02 because i was into -R then..i believe they were the + version of the -R 4x G04
maxel ritek mxlrG02=RITEK R02
of course the 8x R03 have superceeded them.
the burn speed is a tad high for the R02 and GO4. 2.4x would be better and 4x for the GO5
hope this helps

Hi creaky, gurnard
seems that we've beaten this one to death? My gut feeling is (like yours) in that thre is something with this disk and/or the way it was burned that is making it unplayable. In most cases it wouldn't be a big deal, but in this case since it is a compilation disc of rare music footage, I do.
The other strange part is that now, I can't play the disk-in-question at all - it plays like one frame at a time (really slowly). I think I'll try re-installing the Intel Application Accelerator and see if that helps.
Anyway, if you have any other ideas/suggestions, please let me know.
thanks for your help...

have you tried copy/pasting (via windows explorer) the 'video_ts' folder to your hard drive ?, then you could reburn to a.n.other disc....

yea, I have. That was one of the first things I tried. I did email the guy who sent me the dvd's and asked him what burning software he uses.
That's why I've been thinking that the problem is file related. The disk I copied the files to (copied them to the heard drive first, then to the new disk), have always worked fine for me. In fact, after I made the updates you suggested, I burned another disk hoping that whatever was odd about the original disc would be corrected by the updates and that files would be copied over and the disk would play perfectly. No suck luck - however, I do have 2 very nice cup coasters if you're interested.

well i think you're gonna have to try some different discs (i'm loathe to say that though, as those Riteks aren't new so should work fine in your drive i'd have thought. tell you what, do a 'simulation burn' thus only going thru the motions with a blank disc, not creating a coaster, and paste the section of log that it produces, just to check the basics again...
