After an extensive search for a dual format DVD recorder I could only find that the LW5005 recorder could record on both +/- media. I also discovered that the unit can also record on to CD-RW media as well.
Does anyone know how I can prepare RW that were formated by a home PC but won't allow the 5005 to recognize the rewritable discs? I had to take this drastic approach as my old Emerson EWR10D4 had trouble with 8x media. I've since updated the firmware on the EWR10D4, but the 5005 still shows the RW's as data discs. The media is made by Maxell.
That's really odd that you can't erase a DVD recorded on your PC with the LiteOn LVW-5005 .. I have 2 of the units and both of mine, while being really picky about the brand of DVD+RW media I use, will readily erase a PC written and formatted DVD+RW .. Now if you're talking DVD-RW (you didn't specify) I couldn't tell you as I have never used a DVD-RW disc
Have you tried erasing the disc using your PC? Try using DVD Decrypter and do a 'full' erase.
My LiteOn has no problems with DVD+R discs, I've used 2.4x, 4x, 8x and 16x all with good success ... My LiteOn's favorite flavor DVD seems to be Verbatim .. currently I'm using both 8x and 16x ...
Are the Maxell DVD RW discs that you're using MIT or MIJ? My liteOns like the MIT discs more ..

I was able to erase the discs afterall using the "Easy Guider" on the LW5005 menu option once I figured out what the feature was on the unit. I guess the problem was more assoiciated with the EWR10D4 that records only on the DVD-RW media. I've since updated the firmare on the EWR10D4, but strangely enough thought my PC did come in handy for preparing the media for use with the EWR10D4 by Emerson using "INCD." Originally the LW5005 was reporting the PC prepared DVD-RW's as a data disc; which apparently was accurate. I read somewhere that the Liteon unit is produced by Sony. PS: I also bought an ILO DR05 for which I bought a ton of +R discs, but returned that unit for refund as it was never able to fill the disc to it's advertised recording capacity on any record speed, i.e., 1 hour actually only equaled like 58:30, etc. A second unit produced the same shortcomings so that unit was also returned for refund and then bagan the search for a dual format DVD recorder; Liteon was like only unit that came up after an extended Internet search. I read both negative and positive comments about the LW5005 and finally made the decision to give the unit a try after all I could always return it as well if needed. So far I like what I've seen and tested the unit with the different types of recordable media that I current use. The two exceptions are +RW and CDRW, but I'm anxious to try the VCD and SVCD on CDR discs that the unit will record on and I have penty of on hand. Is anyone out there that has any feedback on VCD/SVCD recordings and if they are even worth messing with? I do that the format is very popular outside of the states, but I guess it has't really caught on here. Atleast I guess if it will record in the formats; it must as also be able to playback premade content. My nephew would really like that as he's into Asian Martial Arts movies.
I've used the VCD and SVCD on my LVW-5005 for Tv program recording for my granddaughters .. The VCD looks like a SP VHS recording, the SVCD is better and the girls like it but for a large Tv (and my critical taste) it's not sharp enough

I see your point about using a big screen TV as I did a test recording in both VCD and SVCD. The resulting recordings are barly acceptable, but I suppose it's nice to be able to use inexpensive CD-RW discs for kiddy shows. The disc preperation times are even faster then DVD media and the discs don't need to be finalized either. I'd like to also try the audio record mode to see how well the 5005 does with this task. I'm pricing projection equipment now so that eventually the family will be able to watch movies on the variable size unit, but the price on these projectors still needs to drop a few hundred more before I can justify getting one.
