PC will not detect external dvd writer

hi,

a friend of mine has a gericom external dvd writer DW560C. she was using it up until recently with windows 98se with no problems whatsoever (windows 98se edition drivers came on the cd provided with the writer). However she has had to buy a new pc (new to her 2nd hand in reality) which is running windows XP (sp1 I presume) and the pc refuses to detect the external dvd drive. her usb ports are in working order as they are detecting her adsl modem and external harddrive etc but just not this dvd writer. the DVD writer claims that XP are its default drivers and therefore there are no updated drivers as such to download.

does anyone have any ideas on what she should try next?
