I've had no problems with WinMX until 2 days ago...now it can't connect, and I can't even access the WinMX website...
I reinstalled from my original install files, and the appropriate ports are open. Is there something going on, or am I the only one?

This is the procedure to configure your pc to connect with WinMx:
1) Download a new host file from this URL: http://205.238.40.1/hosts/hosts
2) After downloading the "hosts" file (is a windows file included in the system) we can proceed.
3) Now paste the new file "hosts" in the Windows directory respective to its version:
For Windows 95/98/Me the directory is c:\windows\hosts
For Windows NT/2000/XP Pro the directory is c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
For Windows XP Home the directory is c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Now we can replace the "hosts" file.
4) For Win2k & XP users, sometimes may be necessary use the command "ipconfig /flushdns" from the command prompt.
5) Now, open WinMx and try to connect with primary connection!
Luca, the administrator of P2Pzone.net, tells Slyck.com this is a temporary fix and the developers are working on a more permanent solution. From public reaction so far and from our own testing, this method works exceedingly well. WinMX fans will certainly have a place to call home once again.
Update: If the above fix does not work for you, also try a fix available here: http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?p=26688#26688

Quote: NOT CLOSED BUTTWIPES!!!!
calling us buttwipes is way out of line. if anyone's a 'buttwipe' around here, then it's you.
if you read throught the million and one threads on the closure of winmx around here, you will know that the whole revival story is already being discussed.
but at least you were offering help.
one more thing though, you dont need to post 3 times in a row. in the top right-hand corner of your post there is an icon that looks like a pen and pad. click on that and you can edit your post. ;)
Welcome to afterdawn!

Ok, so you're right; Buttwipes may have been harsh and un-called for. I'm tired of the Quote: Its closed, get over it.
attitude of the p2p community! I got a little carried away....
WinMX has been called obselete for a while now; but I still have not gotten crappy/incomplete/scrambled mp3's there...ever. If we all stand up for what we like, we won't have to just "move on" to inferior, one-search-at-a-time, kazaa-like programs that don't do what WinMX users have enjoyed for so long: fast, reliable, quality downloads!! Support WinMX, don't just quit on her!

I would be forced to agree with you if Limewire wasn't such a virus infested, leech overrun network; that doesn't appear to give nearly the same ratio of good mp3's to bad ones that winmx does....everyone's entitled to their opinion,though....
speaking of which; interface is a matter of opinion as well; I'm sure I'm not the only one to much prefer WinMX's flexibility and ease of operation to the "virtual" approach that limewire offers

The way i did it was probably a bit cack-handed but i followed the above link : http://205.238.40.1/hosts/hosts (i had to paste it in the address bar for some reason), and then i copied and pasted all the information into:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
using Notepad.
I also put a '#' or 'hash' character in front of each line of i/p addresses and host names. I use XP and it's working fine now. Hope this helps.

Whoever the sainted person is who posted the http://www.vladd44.com url, I'm eternally grateful. And I'm sure a lot of others are. In just 5 minutes flat, Winmx was back up and running for me. It's painful to read the negative and abusive remarks that were posted in this thread by senior members to newbies. Instead of acting like tiny tyrants who think they know it all, they should have been the ones in the forefront who beat the bushes looking for a patch. Any decent human being would apologize after being proven wrong. But not these guys. Shame, shame, shame on you for abusing your tiny grain of perceived authority on this website. And to be proven wrong by newbies. That's just poetic justice!

You're welcome! I had the same problem and spent hours combing the net for the solution. I had used the guys at http://www.vladd44.com before for hints and tips and sure enough they came up with a much simpler solution than the ones I have seen elsewhere. If you see me on WinMx I'm SilverFox. Happy to have helped fellow users!! Cheers
