I recently bought a pack of 10 Datawrite Titanium Double-Layer 2.4x DVD+R hoping to back up the 6 main movie discs of LOTR Special Extended Edition.

I put in disc 1 of The Fellowship Of The Ring into my DVD-ROM drive. I opened DVD decrypter, then clicked Mode -> ISO -> Read R. I ripped the DVD to my hard drive and ended up with an ISO file and MDS file.

I put in one of the aforementioned DVD+R DL blank media into my NEC ND-3540A DVD-RW drive. With all other programs closed and even going to the extent of switching my modem off, I click Mode -> ISO -> Write W.

I browse and select the MDS file, to burn the ISO to the dual layer DVD. I choose a speed of 2.4x and click burn. About 40 mins later, burning is complete. I did not touch my PC during the burning process.

With the newly burnt dual layer DVD still in the NEC drive, I playback the movie using WinDVD and it works fine. But then as I transfer the DVD to the DVD-ROM drive and try to playback the DVD, it doesn't work! It appears as though it cannot read the disc at all. Dang, I think to myself.

I put the dual layer DVD into my PS2 and same problem. It just can't read it. I also try the DVD in a standalone DVD player, but no such luck, it just reports 'Bad disc'.

I need to know where I've gone wrong! The DVD plays fine in the drive that wrote it but in nothing else.

After ripping the original DVD to my hard drive, I mounted the image and that played fine (just to let you know).

I am also aware that Verbatim dual layer DVDs appear to be the only ones that work well. But I didn't know that at the time of purchase of my DVDs. And I really don't want to spend a fortune (again) on more dual layers.

Other info which may be useful:

My NEC ND-3540A DL burner has firmware version 1.01 and the latest out is 1.03.

I have Windows XP SP2, 1.70Ghz AMD Athlon XP 2000+ processor and 768MB RAM.

Just to clarify, where have I gone wrong? And how can I ensure a successful, flawless backup?

I would be grateful if any of the experts on here can help me out as I have thoroughly read through many threads here on Afterdawn forums and could not find a solution.

Thank you.

I would try flashing your NEC with some modified f/w that enables it to booktype dvd+r/rw media dvd-rom. I don't have a link to the f/w but you can google for it.

I would suggest two possible reasons for the failure...

1.) Your standalone player does not work with DVD+R dual layer discs. Some do not.
2.) Your standalone player does not "like" the particular brand / type of media (and you are correct, the Verbatims are by far the favored media...)

Have you tried to check the compatibility of your standalone with DVD+R dual layer discs?
-Perhaps check over at VideoHelp.com, where they have a large data base you can search. You can see if anyone who owns your same player has reported whether they were able to play these discs. I leanrted that two of my home players would NOT play DVD+R dual layer discs there (although my other three players will).

Have you tried this disc in a few other standalone players? This would at least help you to narrow the problem. If it plays on some other models, that gives you a clue. If it fails to play on several other players, that also gives you a clue.

Then, I would also suggest the same as the reply above, that "booktyping" the disc to be a DVD+R DVDROM disc _might_ make it work. This is the reason for the suggestion above, as there are a lot of players still out there that do not like any DVD+R media, but many of those same players function fine if it a DVD-Rom disc.

Thanks for your replies Mort81 and Bruce999.

I actually tried putting in the dual layer DVD into a friend's recently bought H&B DVD player a few hours ago. Shockingly enough, it worked fine! No problems at all. Flawless playback. It was beyond my expectations as I was adamant that the DVD+R DL was a coaster.

I will try the DVD in another standalone DVD player and take observations. If successful as well, then I suppose I can continue burning the way I was to the same pack of dual layer discs. I will buy a new DVD player anyway so I will find one that is compatible with these DVD+Rs.

If all else fails, "booktyping" may be an option.

I would also suggest:

Visit this page, and search by your DVD player name and model. See if the database gives any information as it whether your player is even supposed to play DVD+R dual layer discs, and also what others who have tried it have reported.

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers

Then, check and wee what it says about DVD ROM discs. (Why bookmark and risk a very expensive coaster without checking first to see if this is supposed to work on your player?)

Then, check your owner's manual, to see what the manufacturer might have said about this (although your player may have been introduced prior to the release of the first DVD+R dual layer discs, so it may say nothing.)

If you cannot find your manual, MOST major brands now have these on line for a freee quick download, at their own website.

According to that database, Bruce999, the first standalone DVD player that I tried my dual layer DVD (and didn't work) on is not compatible with DVD+R DL. Makes sense.

The second standalone (H&B) that played my DVD perfectly is listed under the videohelp database as compatible with DVD+R DL. That also makes a lot of sense.

So, it just depends on the player and whether it is compatible with those types of discs or not.

There are no comments at videohelp relating to the testing of DVD+R DLs on the DVD players I have tested my DVD on. But this is not all that necessary as the compatibility list has explained a lot.

I do not have, nor cannot find an online version of the manual of my DVD player. It's approx. 2 years old. Which may be before introduction of DVD+R DLs? Not sure. My friends's DVD player however is a few weeks old. Maybe most/all new DVD players play DVD+R DLs.
