Hi, I can't find an answer to this problem and I was wondering if anyone could help me.
I have a new BenQ DW1640. It works fine with CDs (data or audio) but it can't seem to see DVDs at all.
If I put in a DVD, the drive spins, the light blinks & it makes a knocking sound (a few knocks, about 8 seconds apart). After it finishes spinning, Windows Explorer, WinDVD, etc., can't see anything in the drive.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Oh, by the way, my motherboard is a Gigabyte K8NS-ultra 939 (nVidia nForce3 ultra chipset).

Is that happening on an original dvd or a backup dvd?

Thanks for responding. They're original DVDs that work in my laptop's drive (movies; I don't have any data DVDs available to check).

sounds like its having trouble reading the dvd...is it badly scratched or something? Maybe try to upgrade the firmware?

Thanks. I should have mentioned that I upgraded to the latest firmware (but the problem existed with the included firmware too).
It has the problem with all the DVDs I have here, which is 3 original and 2 DVD-Rs; all in nearly-virgin condition.
Anyway, even an idea of what kind of problem it could be (drivers, hardware, etc) would help. Thanks.

Sounds like a defective drive. I've got a BenQ DW 1640, a NEC 3540 and a NEC 2510 burner. The BenQ is new and makes all sorts of buzzing and not so good sounding noises (near the end of a burn it has a bad buzzing/zapping sound), also the eject button does not give the feel of confidence. But the BenQ is giving me the BEST burns ever with the use of the "Solid Burn" software, great stuff, I make it learn ALL media. I just wonder how long the drive will last. My BenQ came from China, maybe the Malaysia ones are better made.

The NEC 3540 is also fairly new, but I was very unhappy with the burns, not nearly as good as the old 2510, hence the purchase of the BenQ. But the NEC 3540 has a really solid feel and quite operation, maybe NEC will update the firmware and improve the burns.
