WIN2K crashed, reinstalled, now nothing works! Help!

First of all, hello to everyone here. I'm brand new here, maybe someone can help.

My wifes computer (win2k pro) crashed the other day, needing a full install. It lost the cd rom and dvd player, then stopped working altogether.
I did a full install, then downloaded all the programs recommended on this site.
As an aside, the programs suggested on this site ruled, after a couple of days, i had everthing working great, no problems coverting avi files to mpg movies on cd.
Now, after the reinstall, here is what's happening:

Divx, windows media player and Tmpgenc will not open any avi files. These are files they opened two days ago with no problem.

I have reinstalled just about everything I can think of with no luck. Fresh versions of direct x 9, windows media player, Divx and every codec I can think of does not help.

Gspot, indicates there is an error with Direct show. The last six fields of the program are now empty whereas two days ago, they were all filled in with info, and indicated no problem.

What is direct show, where can I get the latest version? Is it part of windows media player? Internet explorer?

Also, ffdshow gave an error last night during installation indicating a dll file was missing, I think the file name was msvrt70.dll. I ran a reinstall on ffdshow this moring and it did not indicate this file was missing.

Thanks in advance, hope someone can get me back to where I was two days ago.
