Hey, this question probably has been asked many times before but I will ask it anyway, I have a 56K (kilobytes per second) modem and when i connect my average speed is around 45.2K, but when I download stuff my incoming download speed only reahes 4 or 5K MAX? 5 out of 45K? Why is this?... or have I got it all wrong? Thanx...

Don't worry i was once clueless about this also until i asked so i shall explain it to you.

Our total bandwidth is 56kb/s to find out our downstream wee simply devide by 10 which gives us 5.6kb/s

So for 56k = 5.6kb/s
128k = 12.8Kb/s
256k = 25.6Kb/s
512k = 51.2Kb/s

There is also a little overhead which ISP's have i have a 1mb which means that i should be getting 102.4kb/s max but ive seen me get 115kb/s this is to comabt high server loads.

And so on but bare in mind these are thereoetical maximum speeds, there are many factors that affect download speed such as cabling, distance, server load, ISP connection speed etc....

So i hope that cleared it up a bit for you

There are 8 kilobits to a kilobyte. The modem speed is in kilobits, and the download file speeds are shown in kilobytes. Multiply your download file speeds by 8 to see what it is with respect to your modem's connection speed.
