Hi,
I'm just looking for software (not necessarily free-ware)which can back up my dvds to dvd5 which provides the best quality compression. And before i get 100 responses telling me to check out other posts, i have indeed done that. I have already tried cloneDVD2 and just wondering if there is anything out there better.
Thanks

Give dvd-rb/cce basic or dvd-rb/hc a try. Hc encoder is free and comes bundled with the dvd-rb installer but CCE basic costs $58. They don't have all the editing features that clonedvd2 has but will produce superior video quality especially on high compression applications. The only better software is dvd-rb with CCE sp which costs $2000. I use and recommend dvdremake for editing prior to encoding. Here is a guide with links to the software. The pictures are gone but directions are still there. Make sure you dl dvd-rb installer. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/226877 Here's a link to dvdremake. http://www.dimadsoft.com/products.php

It uses the same encoding engine as CCE basic but has more bells and whisles.

Got to agree with Mort81 on DVDRB it puts out beautiful quality. You can try it using the HC encoder which is free and comes with the program. You will not be disappointed although it does take some time to finish the product, the backup movie is well worth the wait especially if you have movies that need a lot of compression.
@Mort81
Got the new comp and setup RB and am just running a backup through now, hope it is setup and working correctly, than new processor is terrific. Shrink only showed 11% CPU usage while encoding.

The HC is my favorite, but it is slower, but it is free. CCE is faster but you would need to buy the Basic for 58.00, because the trial versions will give you a big logo in the right hand corner of the movie, which is annoying.

Thanks again for the reply. But in terms of quality which one would give the better results? And sorry for all these questions

Quality is in the eye of the beholder, it is what you like you would have to do your bakup using both programs and then decide which you like. It comes down to personal preference. I think HC is smoother and more thorough than CCE Basic. You can only do 1 pass using the Basic, you can do more if you have the 2000.00 version. Just my opinion.

arniebear,
Cool, I wonder why shrink didn,t use 100% of cpu resorces.
wateva,
IMO CCE basic and hc are very comparable in video quality although CCE basic is faster.

@Mort81
Don't know, just checked the CPU usage for RB and it is running at 51%, must still have juice left in it. Am using HC and it is showing 52% completion in 35 minutes, talk about fast. It is 1/2 the time of my old one.

Quote: You can only do 1 pass using the Basic,
Just a minor correction to what you said arniebear. Default VBR passes on CCE basic is 2 passes and can't be changed.

With dvdremake, other than being able to disable buttons what real difference does it have compared to the editing capabilities of cloneDVD2?

Wateva----DVDRemaker has more control over deleting warning screens, editing menus, even taking out credits of the movie!! You can change the DVD structure and make the DVD smaller so you have more room for the movie so compression will be less. I think that's more than what CloneDVD2 does.I hope that answers your qestion.
