hi all,
first time posting. I have been copying dvds for the past year and havent had any problems. Unfortunately my pc was quite old so bought a new one wit a 2.8ghz processor and a gig of ram, also bought a new liteon 16x dual layer burner, not really gonna need the dual layer as i use dvd shrink and strictly bought it for the 16x speed. Ok here is my problem, on my old pc i could use nero and copy from dvd to dvd ( bearing in mind that the dvd was preshrunk and was 4.3gb or thereabouts) it only used to take 15 minutes to copy. Now for some reason on my new pc it is taking an hour and the discs i am using support 8x. I cant understand why it is taking so long. I have checked the dma and it seems to be enabled?. Hope i have not posted too much info as it is my first post.
Any advice would be great.
Is there any other decent dvd to dvd burning software for dvds that are copies?. I have no problems copying original ones.
Thanks...

the slowdown SEEMs to me that the DMA is off, and has reverted back to PIO mode...are you SURE DMA: ON?
here is a quick guide to help you out:
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm
especially since you got a NEW burner and a faster computer (1 gig of ram and 2.8ghz is MORE than enough), what kind of media are you using now if i may ask? is it DVD-R or DVD+R? what brand is it? i have a few liteon drives and they DO NOT like cheapo media, regardless of rated speed...
dvd decrypter is in MY OPINION, the best burning prog for copies of copies...ISO READ--->ISO WRITE~ done~!
and welcome to AfterDawn~ :) enjoy ur stay~

thanks for the welcome and the advice.
I am using memorex 8x DVD-R.
I usually use bulkpaq which i prefer but they were only 4x.
Can you recommend some media?
I checked the dma last night and it seemed to be ok, excuse my ignorance
but does it have to enabled on the source and the destination drives?
Thanks Again.

hi,
your DMA should be "ON" on all your drives, yes~ :) but, the primary burner is MOST important of the 2. :)
as with your media...THAT is the BIGGEST problem, i would highly suggest you "ditch" BOTH those above stated media, i won't even start my rant here about how much i despise "memosux" CMC MAG manufactured discs~ OUCH~!
bulkpaq is also a NO-no based on the experience of my buddy creaky, he happened to have MANY of the FAKE Taiyo Yudens under the Bulkpaq brand~ :)
i would strongly suggest you try some AUTHENTIC Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim for starters~ :) Taiyo Yudens, or TYs, are MADE IN JAPAN~ the "fake TYs" out there in the market are NOT made in Japan, that is one of the easiest ways to tell~ secondly, Verbatims are primarily MADE IN TAIWAN, these are very good media also~ :)
if you are in the U.S. and would like to order online, i personally recommend TRUSTED vendors such as www.supermediastore.com, amazon.com, newegg.com, rima.com...if shopping locally, look on the spindle wrappers for the Fujifilm & Sony brand names, thus far, IF they say "made in japan" on the wrapper, the 8x DVD+R format for BOTH those brands are authentic Taiyo Yudens :) and in your case for preferring DVD-R format, the Fujifilm MADE IN JAPAN 8x are ALSO Taiyo Yudens, the made in taiwans are NOT~ :)
hope that is a good start, let me know if you need any more recommendations on media, feel free to PM me if necessary and i will guide you step by step to determining GOOD quality media~ that is MY expertise here on AD~ :)
i'm sure others will comment too, but, the MAIN problem i see now is IN YOUR CHOICE OF MEDIA~ a problem often times overlooked, we all gotta start somewhere~ :)

cheers for the reply, thats a bit of an eye opener, i have had pretty good success with the bulkpaq to be honest, the only problem i am really having is the speed which i reckon is the dma that you mentioned. I am in ireland so the range of blank dvds are limited and expensive. I can order 50 bulpaq DVD-R 4x for 10euro which i think is less than $15. I will double check the dma issue when i get home from work. Thanks again for all your help it is much appreciated...

*peeks in over kivory's shoulder. Hi bcashion welcome to afterdawn. I agree with kivory regarding memorex and bulkpaq media. Also as with most pcs did it come with any pre-installed software such as roxio or cyberlink producer (something like that). Seems there might be a conflict as well as your burner being in pio and not dma mode. One thing I would also like to point out is if you are in the U.S. I suggest initially trying some sony which can be purchased at your local walmart in a 3-pack for on $6.99. Also look at the latest firmware for your burner to see if there is an update that came out after your purchase. Please let us know how you are fairing as i am in the market for a new desktop burner and the model you bought is one I am seriously considering buying.

Hi Matt,
Cheers for the reply. I only bought the liteon yesterday had a slower 4x one and it has served me very well for the past year, the only reason i bought the new one (don't laugh at this) was because my new pc is black and the old burner was a creamy color, also because i fancied something a bit faster (which is not happening). I have DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink (what an amazing piece of software) Nero 6 something OEM that i got with the new burner and sonic something or other. I am thinking of uninstalling sonic as i havent used it (it came pre installed) on the pc.
That might be causing a conflict? As for litoen i would highly recommend them , we use them in work aswell and they are very reliable. Knowing what media to buy is a worry, i need something cheap coz i go through about 20 or 30 discs a week.
Thanks again for the reply.

Memorex, then Bulkpaq...... (creaky rushes off to get the white jacket with long white sleeves). *cough* Bulkpaq FAKE Taiyo Yuden TYG02 discs, so won't ever trust anything those jokers produce *cough*
:)
will be back, got some stuff to take care of. Hopefully kivory666 will have prepared a prescription for my cough by the time i pop back..

hi brian,
well, since you are in Europe, i don't really know what to tell ya~ i totally understand the price of media being the MAIN REASON for going with bulkpaq, but, to be successful in dvd backups, i for one stand by the fact that QUALITY MEDIA is VERY important if you want flawless playback/compatibility. :)
hmmm...perhaps my buddy creaky can point you in the right direction in buying quality media over there in Europe, i'm over here in the U.S. and quality media is everywhere around here for the same price, if not cheaper than the crappy stuff :P
2ndly, yes, definitely UNINSTALL that Sonic software, when i bought my first Dell manufactured computer many years ago, Sonic was the FIRST thing i uninstalled right out of the box, for me personally, i HAVE had it conflict with Nero, so, get it outta there~ :)
@matt72
good to see you again buddy, im still spreading the TY gospel as you can tell~ :)
@creaky
my prescription to you buddy, take 2 AUTHENTIC TYG02s and call me in the morning~ :)

right, i've had a read thru now, so it's time for the proverbial logfile request - pls post LAST section of your Nero log, which is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar

well, you need to enable the DMA on your Liteon drive, but in regards to getting rid of the Sonic, good job~ :)
also, in THIS particular log, i noticed you are NOW using the dreaded CMC MAG crap (i assume it's the Memorex) Quote: Recorder: LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1673S, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: CMC MA - G. AE1
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193
i STILL think the MEDIA is the culprit in this case...but, if you do a playback and it is fine since Nero DID say it was completed successfully, then that is good~ i can't tell you how long that CMC MAG disc, whether it is successfully burned or not in this particular incident is going to last, but, it's a good start. if you insist on using up the rest of these CMC MAGs, i would lower the burn speed to 4x~ to be on the safe side~ :) if you DO see any pixellation/freezing/skipping during playback on your backup, you will NOW know WHY~ crappy media+higher speed burning= above mentioned problems~ :)
so, it's good to hear you are learning and picking up things along the way...good luck on your future burns, but i would consider from now on...use better media~ :) for your OWN sake~ your wallet will thank you later down the road~

@bcashion,
Here is an alternate way to enable your dma http://www.burstcopy.com/dma/xp/. I would comment on buying a different burner because of the color but I'm all laughed out :). Also after updating your firmware as bigfatboy stated I suggest slowing your burn speed down to 4x to see if you can get a good burn. If the dma still doesn't switch from pio then try uninstalling in device manager, rebooting and xp will pick it back up and check to see if your dma is on. Let us know how it goes.

HI All,
The saga continues. Upgraded the firmware no problems.
Can't enable the dma, tried uninstalling and still nothing, would it have anything to do with both drives being on the same IDE??
I am going to try matts solution when i get home from work.
Cheers again.

Hi guys,
Cannot get the DMA enabled on the dvdrw. I cant change the ide either. The hard drive is using a different cable type so the only option i have is to have my cdrw (which came with the pc) and the dvdrw on the same cable, with the dvdrw being the slave. The pc doesnt seem to like when i make the dvdrw the master (its a dell pc).
It is doing my head in at this stage.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Brian...
