I am not sure if this is to "newbie" of a question or not, but here it goes. I have heard DVD Decrypter does a better job backing up than DVD Shrink does, but I need DVD Shrink to make my Movies fit on one DVD. Is there a way to use both (a guide published?) that someone could give me step by step instructions? I am trying to backup a TV series set and want to make sure no skipping, I have bought the Taiyo Yuden 4X DvD-R's to help prevent the skipping and only burn at 4X speed instead of the Max that it can. Any other advice to get rid of the skipping would help also. Thanks for everything in advance!
try these 2 guides
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/petesguide3.html this one does a full back up
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/petesguide7.html both are step by step guides to backing up
but to reply to your post, decrypter and shrink go hand in hand backing up, they compliment each other and is what i use without problems.
shrink does not back up, only compresses your file, while decrypter cracks the encryption on the dvd movie.
My advice is use Shrink unless it does not work. It is the easiest and fastest and you know right away if it does not work because it analysis it up front. If it has problems I would try the extra analalysis more. If that does not work try something else. DVD Decrypter is a bit more flexable and the algorythims may be a bit more advanced. I do know it will "try harder" to read a sector before it "gives up". If that fails sometimes you can just open the drive door and close it again and retry. There is an art to reading some disks. Sometimes it is the actual incryption scheme but more often for me there is a problem with the surface. I suspect a scratch or blemish prevents the key code from being read properly. I have seen nasty looking disks copy fine and nearly new one not copy at all. I suspect all my problems have been surface errors I am not into the more unusual videos. I believe many of the new disks coming out have schemes that are much harder to copy if there is any surface damage.
DVD Decrypter works to decode and extract the decoded files to your Hard Drive. Shrink has a decoder built in to it also. You can also use DVD Fab Decrypter to do the same thing, but Fab decrypter is updated regularly to handle the newest encryptions. Then use DVD Shrink, Nero Recode, or DVD Rebuilder to shrink the DVD9 movie files to a DVD5 disc. The guides gear79 listed are the best way to go. I am just trying to give you a simple explantion to the burn process but it seems like i am making it more complicated than it really is.
@star321 You have already done one of the most important things to prevent skipping , buying good media and burning slowly. Most of that skipping/freezing is caused by bad media and/or burning too fast. One other thing you can do to help prevent skipping is to make sure you De-Fragment your Hard Drive often, or at least check for fragmentation often. To check this go to windows explorer and right click on your HD. Go to properties, and then click on the Tools tab. Defrag HD is second option down. Good luck.
