FLASHING PROBLEM WITH HP DVD WRITER

I have a hp writer dvd400i. My device worked fine when i first installed it in all aspects. About a week after I had it HP sent me a firmware update. I updated it like it said and then the problems began. It reads regular cd media fine. But it doesnt recognise any dvds whether its a movie or a dvd+r or rw. So after many discussions with support and trying all of their troubleshooting ideas and having no success I decided to try and god back to the original firmware. I downloaded it from the site and ran the program. It starts out by opening the drive and blinking green, then after the progress bar goes half way it closes the drive and freezes. After 10 minutes of being frozen it pops up an error that says something about it not being able to open up to book 80 of the firmware file. Any one have a opinion on what that means and what else I could try.
