Ever since upgrading to Nero 6.6.0.16 my CD-R discs seem to burn perfectly but when I play them back in my Technics CD player they click and pop. Not a lot but enough for them to be unusable.

This problem ONLY seems to occur when copying discs directly in Nero Express, burning from the hard disc in Nero Burning Rom seems to be okay.

I've tried two burners:

Matshita SW-9571 and
LG GSA-4163B

I'm using genuine Taiyo Yuden CDs.

I rolled back to Nero 6.3.1.25 (cleaning with Nero Clean Tool) and the popping continued. I put 6.6.0.16 back. Same problem. Today I went back to 6.3.1.25 and the popping seems to have stopped. It's just weird.

Does anybody know what might be causing these digital pops and why Nero isn't registering them? Could another piece of software (DVD Shrink, etc) be causing some conflict? Is there any way to fix it?

Thanks!

John

Hi, thanks for fast response! I'm not sure exactly which bit you need so I've copied my entire logfile (without registration key number) below.

I'd be VERY grateful for any/all suggestions :-)

ps the logfile is appended to by subsequent burns so the way to identify the sections is via these lines "*** NeroAPI, History File *** ======"). as it happens you have a section of dvd log in there so i've made my journey useful and have commented on that at the end of the cd log section...

cd log section -
Quote:
Nero version: 6.3.1.25 (Nero Express)
- too old, 6.6.0.16 is latest.

CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B nvatabus Port 0 ID 2 DMA: Off
DiskPeripheral : IOMEGA ZIP 250 nvatabus Port 0 ID 3 DMA: Off

Quote:
Physical memory : 511MB (523760kB)

Memory in use : 80 %
- 512mb is sufficient total memory, but you have to close down more programs prior to any burns as this is gonna cause your hard disc to 'swap' as it starts to dole out 'virtual memory'. keep sufficient memory free and you won't be using virtual memory which is a portion of your hard disc
Quote:
Burn process completed successfully at 40x (6,000 KB/s)
- there's part of the problem. i only do 24x max for data cd's and 16x max for audio cd's - with popping/skipping audio cd's it's caused by the other problems i've mentioned and i'd keep the burn speed down even when you've addressed all the other problems

Last address to be written: 2286127 (508:01.52, 4465MB)
- if you use DVS Shrink, set target size in Shrink's preferences to 4300MB, thus avoiding outer edge of discs and not sacrificing much space
Quote:

Hi! Thanks again for your VERY thorough reply. There are a few things there that I'm not too worried about.

For example, burning speed. These clicks were occuring yesterday when I was burning CDs at just 12x speed on my Matshita SW-9571 so I've kinda ruled that out.

I am, however, a little baffled about this whole DMA thing...

I've re-installed my nVidia nForce2 drivers but the settings don't seem to have changed. Furthermore the configuration of my device manager screens seem a little unusual.

When I go into Device Manager and double click "NVIDIA NFORCE 2 ATA Controller (V2.6)" under the "IDE ADA/ATAPI Controllers" menu a new window comes up with the following tabs:

1. GENERAL
2. PRIMARY CHANNEL
3. SECONDARY CHANNEL
4. DRIVER
5. RESOURCES

My LG CD/DVD burner is listed on the SECONDARY CHANNEL TAB as the MASTER DRIVER. In the "Transfer Mode" field underneath are the words "Ultra DMA 2 - Ultra 33" with a green tick next to it. But this is all greyed out. Underneath, the option "Let BIOS select transfer mode" is selected and highlighted.

All of my other drives - including the hard disc are showing the same.

Is this my problem? Do I need to deselect "Let BIOS select transfer mode" and force the setting to "Ultra DMA 2 - Ultra 33" or should I choose one of the other settings in the list, e.g. "Ultra DMA 1" or "Ultra DMA 0"?

Thanks again! :-)

OK, this is REALLY weird.

I've forced my hardware DMA settings off "Let BIOS select transfer mode" and onto the following settings:

PRIMARY CHANNEL

Master Drive 6Y120LO:
Ultra DMA 6 - Ultra 133

Slave Drive Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1712:
Ultra DMA 2- Ultra 133

SECONDARY CHANNEL

Master Drive HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA 4163B:
Ultra DMA 2 ? Ultra 133

Slave Drive IOMEGA ZIP 250:
Ultra DMA 2 ? Ultra 133

I then removed Nero 6.3.1.25 using Nero's clean remove tool and replaced it with 6.6.0.16. I copied a CD onto a CD-RW (for testing purposes only) and, bizarelly, the Nero log STILL shows that the DMA settings are "off" for all drives!

Here is the log:

====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======

I really don't know what to do next. Is there something in BIOS that I need to tweak? What I don't understand is that normally, if Nero detects that DMA is off, it fires up a message asking if you want to turn it on. I've had no such message.

Furthermore I don't understand why it says: Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ?

Because I don't have, and have never had, an external burner.

Thanks again for your continuing help,

John

Crap! I thought I'd made a breakthrough there. I downloaded and installed some different drivers from MSI's website. All of a sudden the Primary IDE and Secondary IDE channels were separate and "DMA if available" was displayed. I did a burn and Nero FINALLY acknowledged that DMA was ON.

YAY!

So I did another burn (24x speed) and... a massive digital pop about 30 seconds from the end. ARGH!!!!!

Is there something else I can tweak?

I'll update the firmware but I don't think it's to blame because the last 2 firmware updates from LG were for DVD issues, not CD ones.

I was using the CD-RW as a test only to check the results in the Nero Log. I've ruined 12 CDs already!

I guess Nero is just not working right.

OK. I've done everything. I've installed the latest version of Nero. I've updated my DVD burner's software. I've reduced my burn speed to x16. I'm using CD-Rs rather than CD-RW. My DMA settings are fine.

And I still have problems. I'm currently 8 tracks into listening to my copy. So far it's cracked once and, just now, mid-way through track 8 it's skipped VERY badly.

What the hell is wrong with this thing? I've copied the Nero Log below. Is there ANYTHING more I can do?

I just played the disc in Windows Media Player 10 and it skips in exactly the same place (3:20 into track 8).

:-(

I suspect there's something wrong under the surface. Possibly in BIOS or the registry but I have no idea what it could be. I've used Nero's own software cleaner to uninstall the program in the past.

ok, let's something other than disc copy stuff (i don't ever use Nero for anything like that). here's one of my fave programs - cdex 1.51 - http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/downloads/2128746/cdex-51 - use that to rip audio tracks from original to your hard drive, then use Nero to create an audio cd from those tracks

Well this is interesting. Maybe.

Prior to trying the program you suggested, I used Nero Burning Rom to save the tracks from my original CD directly onto the hard drive. I then burned those tracks onto CD using Nero, burn speed 16%.

It seems to be a perfect copy.

Okay, so I could do it this way every time, but I'd like to know why the basic "copy disc" program isn't working properly for me when it appears to be working for everybody else! And it's certainly worked flawlessly for me in the past...

(PS Just tried another copy - with "on the fly" disabled - and it's another coaster. My 18th TY coaster in 3 days!)

dunno, 'fraid i don't know the answer to that question. i've been burning CD's pretty much since recordable CD's first came out and i've very rarely had problems, whether it be audio or data, and the only 'copy disc' program i've trusted i think is clonecd, other than that i've always preferred other methods to copy audio/data around.

Creaky, do you mind if I ask which IDE channel your reader and burner are on? At the moment my reader shares the IDE channel with my hard drive and I'm wondering if it might be slowing things down. Would it help if I put both CD drives on the Secondary channel and moved the Zip drive over to the Primary channel with the hard disc?

I've been reading today that VIA (presumably Athlon) motherboards are susceptable to DMA problems and that's what mine is. Not sure if that's relevant.

Thanks again for your continued help.

i've only got a tiny case so i've got the proverbial split of hard drive on Primary IDE channel, dvd burner on Secondary; and my most heavily-used drive (cd burner/dvd-rom combo) is actually in a Belkin USB2.0 enclosure.

i can't remember the spec of the Zip 250, mine was a scsi attached one but i didn't use it, only bought it as a disaster recovery drive as my dad has an internal zip drive; however he very rarely uses it so i put my zip drive away. maybe you can ditch the zip drive and move to something better, ie use your cd burner instead.. did a quick google but it ddn't turn up much - http://pw2.netcom.com/~deepone/zipjaz/atapi.html and http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/234552
