Mp4 is the standard for high-def broadcasts in the US and the major format being used by next-gen, HD-DVD and BlueRay, optical media. Examples of Mpeg-4 video codecs are: DivX, AVC, and VC-1 (WMV9-HD).

AAC (MPEG4-AAC) is the format choosen for Mp4-Audio. A raw AAC file and a Mp4 (.m4a) file are identical in terms of sound quality. The Mp4 container allows the file to be read by MPEG4-AAC compatible apps.
Anyway, dBpowerAMP can convert to AAC (MPEG-2 or MPEG-4) and Mp4 (.m4a) but only with the correct plug-in installed.

I thought the new HD-DVD's and Blue-Rays were still stuck on MPEG-2. I thoiught for sure I read that. Now I think some are trying to get them to use MPEG-4, but I think the same old MPEG-2 is the standard.
Yes! VC-1 is an unofficial name. I think WMV-HD will become its official name once its approved for use in broadcasting. VC-1 is an MPEG-4 extension of WMV-9.
