I just bought a sony 400 disc changer and it does not recognize about 20% of my back up dvds which was the sole purpose of buying the thing. I have used Memorex 16x and Phillips 4x (I dont think it likes the Phillips) I have used dvd decrypter with dvd shrink as well as nero with dvd43 to back up my dvds, depending on the difficulty of the burn. The rejected dvds will play on every dvd player I own(both Hp and Compaq computers, toshiba, kawasaki, amphion mediaworks)all of them just fine but my $350 Sony wont even recognize them as dvds. My latest back up of Fever Pitch was done using Nero at the slowest speed possible using a memorex disc, it works great every where except in the Sony. Any tips as to which media, which software, will guarentee me results. Should I upgrade to the newest Sony dvd changer? Should I take this expensive piece of crap back? Are there any other 400 dvd disc changers out there on the market that are less of a headache?

A couple things come to mind--Number 1 is the type of media--look around this forum and you will see that Memorex is just about the worst--Number 2 is that you do not mention the type of burner you use or whether the media is (+ or -)--If you have a burner that supports Booktyping (Bit-Setting)--then use the (+) type of media and set the burner to booktype the disk--Media--Use good quality--I only use Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden--there are other good types--ie. Ritek, Sony, most Maxell---but definately stay away from Memorex--Hope these ideas help--good luck

I am using the Lite-On 8x double layer r+/rw that came with my hp a720n. I just find it hard to believe that I need to switch to more expensive media when you switch to an expensive dvd player. What is the point, I can have cheep dvds and my kawasaki. I did just buy a hp media center to replace the a720n, and it has a 16x lightscribe that will do r- as well as r+ Have you seen how expensive that media is? Maybe I just need to get over the sticker shock and move on.

Do you know who makes the lightscribe DVD burner for HP?--I use inkjet printable DVD+R media--either Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim Data life plus--These do not have to be too expensive--I get them online at Supermedia Store--wait and get them when they are having a special--then I burn with the Lite-On and print with Epson printer--For you, find out who makes the burner and see if it supports booktyping to DVD-Rom--really helped me, makes my burned disks playable on ANY player--should be able to get the lightscribe media cheaper soon, as they become more available and competition kicks in--Good Luck--Try the booktyping on + media--good luck

busybe68,

As a newbie, I bought the least expensive media - Memorex. I was lucky for awhile, as it id'd as RicohJpnR01. I then bought a 10 pack of Memorex in dvd cases and had a failure rate of 50% - id'd as CMCMag. Fortunately I only invested in a 10 pack to find what bad media was all about.

Good media is not all that expensive, unless of course, you need to have the latest, lightscribe or dual layer. Find GOOD media that works and stick with it.

As a note Sonys can be very picky. Disc changers sound wonderful, but the more moving mechanical parts, the more chance of it breaking down. Just my opinion.

Lets rule out media for sure 1st. Memorex and phillips are two of the largest buyers of cmc magnetics media which is pure garbage. If you don't have problems right off (freezing, pixelating, not being recognized by set top players) you will more than likely down the road. Use this free proggy and give us the manufacturer and ID of both the memorex and phillips media. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Give us the model and firmware vs of your litey drive and I will check to see if it is capable of bitsetting/booktyping (most liteys are) and for a firmware update. Note dvd identifier will tell you the make and model of your drive followed by firmware vs in brackets.

HP TDK, Verbatim, Phillips all make lightscribe media and it is expensive. OK lets say that my media is of poor quality. Then the 20% of the dvds that would not play can be recorded to better media such as Taiyo Yuden. Do I want to do a direct copy using Nero? Copy the movies to my hard drive then make a copy using Nero or DVD Decrypter? Or should I hunt down the originals and start all over again since we all realize how picky Sony is. If I can get this right I may even purchace a second changer since it was on sale.

Stay away from HP, TDK dvd+r, and phillips media. I guess you didn't read my other post since you didn't provide any of the information I ask for. I can't help you if you don't provide the info I request.

I would use dvd decrypter iso read iso write and try to copy your backups to better media.

I would advise against having a disc changer to begin with, Sony or any other brand. Maybe a 5 disc.

Moving parts produce heat - heat and moisture = humidity. You may find all your discs going bad after time. This will hold true especially if you also have an amplifier/tuner in the same shelving unit.

I don't think a disc changer is a good place to store your precious backups......again my opinion.

I learned a long time ago, just how much humidity is produced. I had a vcr in a rather large enclosure, no other equipment. One day the vcr stopped working, I took it to a service depot and when they opened it up there was over a cup of water!

Good chance that is your problem. Cmc magnetics is pure garbage. So what is the model of your litey and f/w vs?

I think you mean a litey SOHW-822S instead of 8225. The latest f/W vs is VPPE http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1979

That drive is probably capable of booktyping DVD+R media to dvd-rom making them more compatable. Here's a link to the lite-on booktype utility and there is also a link to a usage guide on that page. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441

I dont have an ink jet printer. The instructions with the Sony says that it doesnt like that media either. I am looking for shinny blank(no company logo) that I can eventually use for my lightscribe. So far I have been using what was left of my memorex and phillips before I give switching computers. I bought a sample pack of DVD +R from Supermediastore.com but havent tried them yet. I have Prodisc silver, Linkyo, and Tayo Yuden S.T. I guess it is time to experiment. I wanted to make sure that the way that I was burning was OK before I start using more expensive media.

Thanks mort81! That is some reading, I will have to take some time to digest it. Mackdl, thanks for you advice about changers. I Have attacked two fans to my entertainment center to help keep my componets cool. Once I get past all the discs that were not recognized as dvd, then I get to go back and label all the movies whos titles did not show up. I am going to love my new toy even if it kills me.

Are the discs that the CD Changer can read DVD+R or DVD-R

If the -r are the only ones working that is your problem.. The DVD+R discs need to be booktyped to DVD-ROM in order for them to work correctly....

Maybe the CD changer can only read DVD-R or DVD-Roms

Another good site: READ THE LAST REVIEW (#29)

http://www.epinions.com/pr-Sony_DVP-CX985V_DVD/display_~reviews/s...

I personally had been a Sony customer for years, you couldn't beat the quality of their TVs. I'm becoming more and more disenchanted with Sony. I bought a 36" Triniton quite some time ago, when I went to use the component video, I found out the red was defective, probably always was. Of course, the warranty had ran out. Other companies make products equal or better now. I also have a good friend who was the manager of a Sony Store, he'll tell you the same thing. Sony's top priority is MONEY!

The sony dvd changer can read DVD-RW,DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3-CD. I have about 150 disc in the player now. About 30 are not recognized. The majority of them have been recorded on Memorex x16 or x8 media, some have been recorded on Phillips x4. Some were recorded using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink while others were recorded using Nero and DVD43. I am trying to salvage the 30 or so dvd that will play in my other dvd players but not the sony, by re-recording thoses movies so that the new changer will recognize them and avoid backing up movies that will not work in the Sony in the near future. From what I am understanding that my media sucks and that I am lucky that any of theses movies would work in my sony but that my recording technique should be fine.

Good luck busybe68. Use good media, and make use of your Lite-on's booktyping ability - you won't be sorry.
