I have a new double layer DVD burner. It is worth it to buy the double layer 9 GB dvds and not compress my dvd copies or should I continue to use the single layer 4 GB dvds and compress?

I haven't looked at the price differences yet.

It's really up to you with how picky you are with quality. For me if the compression is below 70% then I will use a dual layer disk, but that is just me.

If I choose not to wait I can pick up a 3pack of Verbatim at Walmart for $20 bucks, but if I get them online I can get 5pack for $20 bucks. Prices are dropping for 8.5gb dual layer discs so just check around and Im sure you'll catch a deal.

Since the DL prices are about ? 7,00 to ? 8,00 in my area, it is not worth the price to use them for any reason yet. When prices go down I' ll reconsider my rhoughts. In case that I don' t want to drop any part from the original compilation I split the original DL to two SL discs. The only annoying thing ist that I have to leave my coach to change discs. But in this manner I save the 90% of the cost for the backup.

I allways use single layer 4.7gb discs, just because it's cheaper. The quality is still good, but when the prices for dual layer discs go down I will start to use them.

I'm with oracle. Split the movie to keep 100% quality. Until DL prices come down. If you compress, even to the % mentioned above, the loss of quality will be visible on high quality home entertainment equiptment that you own now or will upgrade to later.

oracle:
DVD Changers are real inexpensive now. I like the JVC line. You can't be both lazy ("...I have to leave my coach to change discs") AND cheap can you? ;-) ... joke... ;-) With two vices, you'll never get into heaven.

When I first looked at the prices of Dual Layer Media, I fell off my chair.

They were about $15.00canadian EACH at the time.

Now you can get DVD+R DL VERBATIM in JEWEL CASE for $6.45canadian each.

Still too expensive, but has gone down in price.

My prediction is that by October 2006 we will be able to get DL blanks for $1.00 a disk.

The pattern is that the clone/crap media makers come out with cheap blanks then the Major Brandname/quality makers follow suit when they see a dent in their customer base or when their distributors stop following the brandname manufacturer's suggested wholesale/retail prices to increase their volume and remain competative.

Also (allow me a little leeway in diverging from the track of this thread):
In a like vane of how retail prices drop via Capitalism: I can do without buying into the new, and VERY expensive, high def standards coming out: If enough of us don't buy into Blueray/HD movie releases or the equiptment to play it on, then the Studios will have to keep releasing movies on DVD format to keep making money (which we CAN purchase at a reasonable price and CAN backup). For me, a DVD played with a Progressive Scan Player on an HD-TV is excellent enough quality for my complete visual satisfaction! As an illustration of what I mean: Twister was the first movie to be released on DVD back in 1996: It was only this year (2005) that I first noticed a few movies that are ONLY being released on DVD with no corresponding VHS release which has the effect of forcing people who have not yet bought a DVD player to do so to see the movie.

Not buying into the new HD technology also gives us years of time to learn how to backup the new HD technology that we WILL be purchasing eventually, while at the same time the price of HD will be falling.

This will also give us +/- 9years to get a more liberal, less pro-big-business (and bigoted against citizens fair-use rights) Administration in Washington and also for the Courts and Legislature to make more liberal decisions on our fair-use rights to backup movies and music that we HAVE purchased (first step is to reform election campaign laws to limit to $1000 the contribution a business or orgainization can make to any and all candidates in all elections (Federal & State) ... The MPAA and RIAA are now BUYING the legislative and executive support for the latest round of laws and court decisions). If it were a movie, I'd entitle it "King George: Redux" or "Elected By The People: The Swiss Bank Account Story". In other words, to a certain extent, the United States Government does not represent the people anymore, it is the representative of the "Overworld". ("We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice...")

Again, thank you for indulging my diversion here.

Best regards

Short answer to original question - No, Yes, DL media price will probably always be about 10X SL media price. Put the DVD title backup on two SL disks if you don't like DVD-9 to DVD-5 compression...

I disagree. The brand / type which is widely reported as being the best when it comes to dual layer blank media are the Verbatim DVD+R discs, and these have broken the $2.00 price barrier twice in the US, in the last three weeks (once at Staples, and this week at Best Buy.com). Other brands of dual layer can be bought regularly now for less than $2.00. This price drop will continue, of course. They will eventually "bottom out," like almost all new products do, but do not expect that final low figure to be anywhere near "10X" the price of a single layer disc. I expect dual layer discs to hit the $1.00 mark sometime in the next 9 months (for the higher quality ones) and I do not believe that single prices will be anywhere near a 10 cent mark... at least, not for ones with any real quality.

Just my own opinions,

-Bruce

I stand corrected - guess I haven't been checking DL media prices in quite a while, but then I don't buy nor even check prices of any type of optical media from brick-and-mortar stores. And I just culdn't bring myself to buy DL media at 10X the SL price, even though I have two DL burners. At 4X the SL price though maybe I'll actually buy a couple DLs and at least try them out.
