Greetings,

My first time in this thread.

I have a new build but no vid card yet. AGP cards can be
gotten for $20 US over at TigerDirect.

But my question on AGP vs PCI has a couple of variables:

I want to use Debian Linux.. in particular the multimedia
distribution based on Ubuntu called aGnula/Demudi (for Debian Music Distribution.) This distro is supposed to be building the best
OS for music and multimedia. But my main functioning OS is
still Windows 98se.

There seems to be a preference in some places for PCI cards in
Linux-- cf. the dream build in Linux Journal for Sept. (or Oct. '05)

I do not play games and do not need the 3D rendering and such
that that requires. I do want adequate playback of video files
and vid streams. I have a dsl hookup at 1.5 Mb/sec.

My fresh build is:

Mach Speed X-Caliber board
Intel Celeron 2.93 Ghz
512 Ultra 3200 400mHz mem
On board AC'97 sound.
Benq 16x dual layer dvd burner.
Various HD's with differing OS'es

Not state-of-the-art, but a lot newer than what I'm using now.
What is the cheapest vid card recommended and please address the debate over AGP vs PCI.

Also, how can I get threads to display last first and first last?
it's upside down for me. I looked in preferences and couldn't
find it.

agp bus speed is at least 2x that of pci & upto 8x. so if pci is 33mhz than agp 2x is 66, 4x is 128 & 8x is 256mhz.

lon, that preference isn't an option on this forum... sorry.

*edit*
i'm not too familiar with linux, so i can't be sure, but are you being accurate when you say "AGP vs. PCI"? do you not mean "AGP vs. PCI-E"?

Exactly!!

AGP cards should not be a problem with the latest distro's of Linux though...

Nope, Not PCI Express. No PCI Express on this
X-Caliber board. It has up to date AGP slot but no
PCI Express, just plain vanilla PCI.

My question got started from the inclusion of a
PCI style card in the Linux Dream machine build they
featured Sept 05 Linux Journal. I was curious why they would select
a $130 PCI from PNY card in that high end build for Linux.

Closest I've seen as a happy medium is one from
Radeon for about $50
