This is my first posting, but I've been burning for a couple of years now. I was wondering if anyone else is having problems with Nero recognizing DL's. I currently use anydvd, dvdshrink, and nero 6 to make backups and have utilized single layer disk (usually TDK -R) for a couple of years. Today I bought a 25 pack of Memorex DL because they were on sale, but when I attempted to burn Nero spitout the disk because it recognized it as a CD-R and not a DVD, does anyone know how to overcome this problem?...Rico.

sounds like your firmware's not current enough. post LAST section of Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar. See my sig for Memorex, however in this instance i think these Memorex will code out as Ritek discs, if so you had a lucky escape with Memorex this time

Hi Folks -
I'm having the same problem with Pioneer DVR 108 & dual layer burning with Nero v6.6.0. Tried last night for the first time & all seemed well until the process was finishing. Here is the logfile, any suggestions greatly appreciated!!!

I believe you don't have the full log, but that's ok.
Quote: I'm having the same problem with Pioneer DVR 108 & dual layer burning with Nero v6.6.0.
Nero is old, it needs to update to the current 6.6.0.16 from Nero 6 Ultra.

Again, I believe you don't have the current firmware for you dvr 108 burner. The cureent should be "1.20". Go here http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/computer/dvdwriters/dvr108/support/f... is the "firmware updates" from Pioneer site, or you can go here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1898 and see it for yourself.
Quote: Physical memory : 511MB (523276kB)

Memory is too low, try to free up more by going to START, RUN and type "mscong" and disable any unuse running programs, or try "ctrl+alt+del" and do the same thing.
Quote: Media type: DVD+R9 Double Layer
Disc Manufacturer ID: RITEK, Media Type ID: D01
Ritek is ok, but not as reliable as Verbatim. Get the 2.4X - 4X Verbatim DVD+R DL "Made In Singapore" - apparently Verbatim outclass any DL media at this moment.

Again, either your burner doesn't like the media, and or you need to update the firmware so it can read other new media better.

Get rid of that horrible InCD stuff, it'll conflicts with Nero and will only make you have "coasters." Go here http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/Clean_Tools.html and download both "Nero General Clean Tool" and "InCD Clean Tool" to completely wipe out both programs from your system. Now download the latest from Nero 6 Ultra (6.6.0.16 - package #1 & #2 only) and reinstall back on your computer. Do not install InCD.

Alkohol thank you, your brilliant!
I did all as you advised & it worked (I had already upgraded Nero, but installed it overtop instead of uninstalling first). Burn worked great, but 7.7GB .iso movie file backup that I burned won't play on my dvd player which is odd.
Last request, if anyone has any ideas of what I might have done wrong, suggestions or links to read are appreciated! I used Nero Burning ROM UDF as it doesn't recognize large .iso files for some reason.
Many thanks!

gregTO,
Is it possible that your standalone DVD player does not play +DL discs, at least, I assume they are +DL since that is the only DL's that it can record to, according to specs?

Hi Rich
Geeze, good point - I never even considered the possibility if my standalone player can play DVD+R DL discs. I'll do some research on that.
Thanks for pointing that out

How old is your dvd player? If it's 2 years or older, then you need to "book type" or "bitsetting" the DVD+R DL into DVD-ROM, so it'll be super super easy on your dvd player to play. Yes... DVD-ROM is the universal format for all functional dvd players. I believe there is a "possibility" that Nero Burning Rom may support changing the "bitsettings" or "book type" for your Pioneer dvd burner.
About upgrading/updating Nero? I recommend getting the "Nero General Clean Tool" and completely clean out Nero from your system, then re-download Nero 6.6.0.16 (Nero 6 Ultra Edition "package #1 & #2 only") to reinstall back on, but since you've updated it already, then it's all good. Don't use the UDF on Nero Burning Rom -- what movie are you trying to burn?
Look at pictures below on how to burn/backup DVD9 movie using Nero Burning Rom on DVD+R DL media. **NOTE: I highly recommend using DVD Decrypter to rip/decrypt into your hard drive first though. DVD Decrypter seems to rip better when it comes to DVD9. Again, first, have DVD Decrypter rip using Mode, File F to your hard drive, then have Nero Burning Rom to do the rest, or you can have DVD Decrypter to write/burn back on as well. Below is just an example of mine: burning "Batman Begins" -- assuming you've got all files on your hard drive already.
**Here is how to "book type" or "bitsettings" using both Nero Burning Rom or Nero Express**
01) open up Nero StartSmart, then click on Nero Burning Rom
02) EXIT out the "New Compilation" when it pops up
03) click on "Chooses A Recorder" (it's a small burner icon next to (I) and the arrow down)
04) click on "Options", then on "Book Type Settings", set to "Automatic" and click "OK" - that's it... easy as smoking. Now every burning using a DVD+R/DVD+R DL/DVD+RW disc your Nero will automatically change the booktype into a DVD-ROM format.
((Here's how to book type using Nero Express))
01) open up Nero StartSmart, then Nero Express
02) now click on "Copy Entire Disc"
03) click on "Options", then on "Book Type Settings", set to "Automatic" and click "OK", then "Exit" out. That's it... easy as sipping on some Corona. Again, now every time when you burn, Nero will automatically change your DVD+R/DVD+R DL/DVD+RW into a DVD-ROM in prior to the actual burning process.
Basically, you only need to set the "book type setting" on Nero once. So, if you book type it with Nero Burning Rom already then you don't need to do it again on Nero Express or vice versa.
**NOTE: I highly recommend using the Verbatim 2.4X - 4X DVD+R DL (Made In Singapore) media only, when it comes to DL burning.
Enjoyed it.... and happy burning..!!

Alkohol - your the best bud! Thanks so much for the great detail in your last post.
I did indeed follow your instructions re: Nero (using "Clean Tools" then reinstalling Nero 6.6.0.16 pkgs. 1 & 2 only), I also used DVD Decrypter to rip/copy the movie to my HD. Funny thing, the movie I've been trying to test DL backup/burning is "Batman Begins"!
So my problems are -
1) I used DVD Decrypter to create a 7.7GB .iso file of Batman Begins, I'll follow your instructions ripping the copy using File F.
2) My standalone DVD player is just about 2 years old, it's a Pioneer DV-563A (with SACD & DVD AUDIO playback) so I'll test "book type" or "bitsetting"
3) I've been testing with Memorex DL, I'll have to search out Verbatim DL media
I'll report back after a few tests.
Many thanks my friend,

Yes... that is what I've been doing: I made a Folder "Batman_Begins" on my hard drive, now I go inside "Batman_Begins" and created another folder "VIDEO_TS", then ENTER and save it. Now, I'm ready to rip, so I'll just browse my "destination" to my "Batman_Begins" then "VIDEO_TS", and have DVD Decrypter ripped/decrypted the movie using "Mode, File F" (this way is better to crack encrypted protections). In addition you can have Nero Recode 2 or DVD Shrink to edit (take out) any unneccessary stuff out if you like, not only that but Nero Burning Rom burns better if you're ripping by Mode, File F.
I have a 3 1/2 years old dvd player and all of my backups with DVD+R/DVD+R DL media that I've booked type to DVD-ROM play flawlessly. So, yes... give it a try (follow the "book type" or "bitsettings" I've provided on my earlier post) and see how's the results. I highly recommend book typing your DVD+R DL media.
((NOTE: in prior to ?decrypt or rip? the original movie, take a few seconds to check the few following ?settings? on DVD Decrypter.))
** open up DVD Decrypter, go to Tools, and Settings
** at General on ?Removal Method? arrow down to ?Aggressive?
** at I/O [check] ?Ignore Read Errors?
** at CSS [check] ?Brute Force ŕ I/O key exchange, On Failure: use key from another file [YES]
** at ISO Write Mode, [check] ?Enable BURN-Proof
** at ?ISO Read Mode? and ?File Mode? [check/tick] on all of the Remove, Ignore, Patch and Create MDS file

The "Options" is located on the lower left just above the [Buffer underrun protection enabled] line. Here is the picture from your Nero and your Pioneer burner. Give it a shot and set it to "automatic" so it will book type all your DVD+R/DVD+R DL/DVD+RW into DVD-ROM alright. Picture for references only:

eeeek!
No, sorry alkohol... if I press "Options" it only opens up what is BELOW the line as shown in the picture ("Buffer Underrun..." & "DVD High Compatability...."). If I pressed options again, it removes what is below the line.

I've done a few researched and found that your Pioneer DVR 108, infact, can automatically booktype any "DVD+R DL" into DVD-ROM. With that being said, it was engineered/manufatured to write DL media that way. Here is what I found http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=1... you can read it.
I've also found some users said that you can "flash/cross" the firmware to the "PIODATA firmware 1.14" which can booktype any DVD+R/DVD+RW into DVD-ROM as well, but it's kind of a risk. So, I can't say to go for it, or not. If you cross/flash your Pioneer to Piodata, you'll void the manufacture warranty though. However, since the original Pioneer is set (can automatically) change the booktype or bitsettings from DVD+R DL, you may want to think twice and make your own decision. Here is a thread I found on CDFreaks http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=113369&page=2&pp=25 talks about DVR108 and Piodata 1.14 -- so before you cross flash the firmware to Piodata, I suggest you do more google/research on the net, http://club.cdfreaks.com/ or
http://forum.rpc-1.com/ and ask some questions before you proceed alright.
Other than that, I hope everything work out for you.
