So on a dvd rom drive on a computer you can override copy protection with dvd decryptor,any dvd etc-can something similar be done on a standalone dvd player??????

It depends on whar make and model of DVD recorder you have. On my LiteOn recorders .. (I'm not sure about the really new ones) all I do is start the source and pause it. Then I start the recorder, then restart the source. On some of the recorders, Macrovision hacks are available. If this is of concern to you, I'd check into available hacks on a particular unit before purchasing it.
