Hi
My first posting on this very informative forum....been reading up on the best media to use etc.
Im sure I read somewhere that the burner I have (Philips 8701) is a rebadged Bemq 1640.The specs are the same..apart from the dvd-r DL and the 2 features(cant remember them off the top of my head)which come available via a firmware upgrade.Anyway im after a second dvd r to put in my system..ive seen a good price for a Benq dw 1640 OEM(£36 inc vat and delivery).I take it the OEM version is the exact same one that got the good reviews?
The Philips I have is an excellent burner...havent had a coaster yet...just a couple of freezes on playback.....checked the disc...Datasafe cmc mag..says it all really. Is there a firmware upgrade that anyone knows of that will enable the 'extra' features? Im on firmware 5024 if that helps.
Ta in advance
John

CMC Mag is poor media. Use a different brand.

Question for johnytuon - I also have a Phillips 8701 DVD burner on my Dimension 5100 (Dell). The user manual says it can burn both +R and -R. Here's the question - should I be able to just drag and drop files using Windows explorer to the DVD to burn them? I'm unable to and was wondering if that works for other people (and thus whether I should be calling Dell support.)

First of all Johnytuon .. If I get several freezes with a particular burn, I consider that a 'coaster' and I would redo the disc ...

stopuse, to get an accurate answer you need to specify what software you're using ..

And finally ... Yes the OEM BenQ DW1640 is the unit getting the good reviews .. other than a BenQ logo on the front and the package that it comes in .. there is no difference between OEM and Retail
