We need a newtv, and my dad's looking at this one. I think it'spretty sweet, and it's only $1700 or $1800 from Best Buy. Is it a good tv? We need one that will last a while, and he wants good picture. One thing, though, is we don't have, and are not getting, HD programming, and this is a 16:9 tv. Whenever I see widescreen tvs playing normal broadcasting, it stretches it to fit the screen. Is there a way to not do that or does every widescreen tv do that? Or does this have a feature that makes that less noticeable? There was something about it being able to change screen sizes or something, but I wasn't sure if it did this. Anyway, just any thoughts or anything on this, and ,aybe an answer to that question wouldbe great. Thanks a lot.

Yes, all digital widescreen tvs allow you to change the aspect ratio of your screen.

Why arn't you getting HD programming? Do you know that the tv in question has a DTV tuner (ATSC tuner) that can allow you to recieve your local channels in HD, during primetime, and digitaly 24/7. All you need is an antenna!

See whats being broadcast for free in your area in HD:

Well, you're getting everything you'll want/need in this model of Sony. I'm a technician and service the Sony/Mitsubishi/Hitachi/Toshiba lines of TV and I plan on purchasing one myself.

Let's look at all the doodads:
HDMI and DVI inputs - 2 digital inputs to use a satellite/cable box to bypass all the video processing. Digital to digital transfers mean no signal distortion at all.

ATSC Tuner - That means if you're cheap, you can get ALL your LOCAL TV stations in Hi Def/Digital without another box on top of your TV.

Component inputs - This is HI DEF too, and you have 2 of them...enough for DVD and a Satellite....SEE HOW many ways you can access any set top box or DVD?? THAT TO ME IS a good reason to buy this model alone...

The next MOST IMPORTANT thing is the Vertical Resolution... On this model it's 1080i. Which means 1080 lines are written from the top to the bottom of the picture to create the entire picture. It's better than some TVs which only write 720 or 960 lines of info for the same picture.

I've had a couple of these units which required alignment of the convergence or a couple solder joints resoldered, mostly due to the large TV in a large truck being delivered a large distance from the manufacturer...to me, that's a minor repair. They don't have a history of failure, and Sony is really big on Customer Care...Number One in fact.

You can't go wrong in buying this, but if you are in the BOONDOCKS (30-50 miles away from a ASC -Authorized Service Company) get a contract on this PTV, it will pay on ONE service call.
