Best PC / Software / Camara combo for DVD home movies

I have been making DVD home movies for the past 4 years on a Sony VIAO and Sony dv camara using MovieShaker and DVDit. It has been a frustrating process due mainly to DVDit glitches. I am ready to step up to something less glitchy and better quality and capabilities. I have heard praise for Mac computers and software for digital editing and authoring. Sony has a new compact HD camara that looks nice. This is where I am leaning, but thought I'd ask the experts here. My main goals are:
Camara: Exc quality, high definition, wide screen, not too bulky
Software: Easy to use, reliable, exc quality
I don't want to spend more than I need to, but am flexible on price. Willing to spend say $3500-$5000 on everything and will try to find software on Ebay. Any recommendations?
