I am thinking about buying a psp. I was wondering if it is possible to back up games and put them on a memory stick for playing? I see that people are backing up movies and putting them on sticks. If this is possible do I use shrink or decrpiter? Any help would be great and anyhing to look out for.
Everything you asked is here on the forums if you read through. I was just in the same boat and spent hours reading through threads here before I bought so I'll spell it out.
First off you're going to need a 1Gig stick. Converted DVD's will take up 210MB to 300MB (depending), and retail PSP Games will take up 200MB to 660MB (depending on game, 660MB is the biggest I've seen).
You will actually want to download 3 things from that forum board:
1) The 1.50 firmware (says "Jap" - don't worry about that
2) Download MPHDowngrader
3) Download UMD Emulator V0.8C
You are now going to do two things:
1) Use the MPHDowngrader hack to get your firmware down to 1.50
2) Install the UMD Emulator
You have to downgrade your version to 1.50 because only that (not exactly but just go with me) will allow you to do what you want.
The UMD EMulator (0.8c) is a game launcher. It's not the only one but it will have everything you need (one stop shopping). It will allow you to launch game ISO files and spoof the version number of your PSP for games that require higher than 1.50. It will also allow you to choose 3 different processor speeds for the PSP to help play emulated games (SNES, GBA, AMIGA, etc) at a proper 'smooth' speed.
Now... It's time to go to work.
1) Downgrade Firmware. Follow this excellent guide: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/downgrade_psp_2.cfm 2) Install UMD Emulator 08.C. This comes with text file instructions, and that was enough for me. This thread may also help: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/238950 Just read the included text file carefully - the only mistake you can make is putting the folders in the wrong places on the memstick.
If you get this far all you need to do is select your Mem stick icon from under the game menu and click on the new smiley face icon under it. When it reboots the PSP you will have a menu and any game ISO files in the ROOT\ISO folder of your PSP memstick will be listed. Click to play.
Movies I'll leave you to find although thare are several movie file (DVD, MPG, AVI, etc) to PSP format convert proggys out there like:

With some you may also need this little addon so they will work on copy protected (real) DVD movies:

I got a 512 stick I dont mind it at all. But you can only put like 1-3 games on it at a time depending on size. Doesnt bother me though. I can fit any of the games out on it after I rip. But now that I have a crap load of NES, SNES, Genesis, GBC games on there it's getting closer and closer to maxing out with barely fitting 1 UMD iso on it. So yeah if you have the money get the 1gig if ya dont get the 512 you'll live if that's all you absolutly can afford like me
i want darkstalkers chaos tower SOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad :'( , but i only have a 512. the largest size ive seen for a psp iso is...around 900, it was for gta liberty cities, if my memory servez meh right styll
