Some of the newer Sony models are pretty picky when it comes to media. What kind of blank media (and the media code) are you using?
Is your new Sony 800A up-to-date with the firmware or what's the firmware on your burner now?
Perhaps, you need to update the firmware if it's behind like 1 or 2. Go here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2074 and verify to make sure it has the current firmware, or otherwise, download it to update your burner. After that, it should be able to recognize other media and codes better.

Thanks for the advice. I do have the latest firmware KY05 and I am using Sony 8x blank disks! That is why I am at a loss as to why it is not recording. Any other suggestions.... Also I am running on XP and using 'AnyDVD' with CloneDVD2 software.
Nice suggestion there buddy, but unfortunately I don't use CloneDVD2 either. I use DVD Decrypter, Nero Recode 2, Nero Burning Rom for all of my dvd backups. Once in a while I'll use DVD Shrink though, since DVD Shrink is free and it's very useful tool to have.
RobPC,
Honestly, I don't think XP or AnyDVD has anything to do with it. There is a posibility that your Sony media may be defected.
I'm not sure what's the real problem behind your new Sony burner here. All I could think of is try to use other high quality media such as Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Maxell and Ritek and see if your burner will be able to burn them. Good luck.
