Hi,
I have Windows XP, SP2, a Plextor PX-708A DVD/CD-RW drive which came with Roxio Easy CD Creator 6 but I also have Nero 5.x from a previously purchased CD-RW and it's what I prefer to use, and several approved DVD-R media to use.
When I use Nero to generate a data disk and add data to the compilation (in this case it's my documents directory and pictures directory with their subfolders) and, as far as I know, everything complies with various limitations such as no more than 8 folders deep, no more than 64 characters in a title and no more than 128 characters in the path and title combined. I have tried selecting UDF, ISO, Joliet, combination UDF/ISO and the result is a DVD that's full, has the entire folder structure correct with all the names of all files listed but when I try and open most if not all the data, the associated program opens up but no data is shown.
This happens no matter where I select a file, at the top of the folder structure or bottom, no matter what the file name is, etc. Also the data is almost all shown as 0-byte size files in Explorer yet properties on the DVD show it at just under 4.7GB. Data verification completed successfully after the burn.
If I use a third party software to "recover" the data (such as ISObuster) almost if not all the data is actually there and recoverable.
This also happens with Roxio AND it also happens on an almost exact replica of the system (my brother's computer). So what could be going on here? The data is there but it is not there. What is being lost here? Is the FAT not being coordinated with the data? Is the FAT corrupt?
I think this may be a problem in Windows since it happens with both Roxio and Nero so perahps my ASPI layer is bad and needs to be updated or reinstalled. Still, Nero seems to think it all went according to plan yet the DVD is "bad".
I have only begun to search for a cause and a solution but hoped someone here might have an easy answer.
I can give more info if needed. The actual version of Nero is 5.10, I believe.
Thanks for the help,
Hans

hi, Nero only introduced DVD burning to the last remnants of 5.x, so i'm guessing your Plex burner is only generally supported....... plus Roxio and Nero together on one system is usually a recipe for disaster.. let's try something, i think it's time for my proverbial request.....
.....let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar. You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

For what it's worth, here's what's there. Seems normal to me and I don't see any obvious errors. Let me know what you think. By the way, I was wrong on the version. It's 5.5.10, not 5.10

As to Nero, strange how your burner is recognised in such an old version of Nero; i imagine this burner's been around quote a long time then, to be supported..

- seems ok, however i don't hold much faith in Nero's verification process. (plus i do mainly dvd burning and i know from bitter experience that a 100% burn does not guarantee 100% perfect output ie a CRC check is the only thing i hold faith in as to the completeness of a burn)..

- uninstall Roxio, it interferes with Nero. To fully eradicate Roxio you may have to google search for 'Roxio Zapper'..
