So I've searched on others' problems on this, but it seems that it really depends on the situation and log as each situation seems to be quite independent from each other. Please help to as why the burn process fails right away on (or right after) the lead-in.

So I've updated the firmware to 1.19 and updated the Nero as well.
Followed the instructions to have DMA set to "on", however I can't get the last one to "on" despite following the instructions.
Also did a simple test burn with a tiny amount of data.

STILL FAILED!! :( Could it be just be the solution of changing brands of media?

I had the same problem that you are having just today as a matter of fact. Here's what I did to resolve it. I completly removed the Nero software that was installed. The problem started when I updated recently so I wanted to go back to the first install. I went to the Nero website and downloaded the cleaning tools that they offer and ran those. Then I used programs like CCcleaner, and such and tried to remove all reference to Nero. Then I installed the Nero software that came with the burner and No updates. Then I backed up a DVD with no problems. I am not going to update until some other problem comes along. Hope this helps.

What media are you using? The log says "medium error", that's a bit of a give away. Especially as it says it on both logs!

@BangHatch -

you don't need to worry about DMA on that last one, it's one of those virtual drives.

there's nothing wrong in the logfile now so maybe your burning either needs a clean or just doesn't like those discs.

- you're burning too close to outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space

Ahh Thanks for the replies!

Creaky,
Do you mean to physically clean (as in with a drive cleaner), or do a "clean" as what Falcon07 mentioned?

I've never changed CDR/DVD+R brands before and these were the discs I've been using ever since, and have been burning regularly. It's only now that happened and no longer wants to burn. I hope it just needs to be cleaned.

Thanks very much (again) :)

@BangHatch - i meant physically as i initially look at things in what might be considered a 'blinkered' fashion, ie i tear a logfile to shreds to rule out all the obvious and go from there..i also do that as it's easier to isolate problems. but all suggestions are good..
