There are many that work but rather than get ripped off look through the guides on this site and find one you like that uses freeware programs. It does appear that a number of the packages you pay for contain mostly, if not all, free programs you could have gotten yourself.

Do these programs just work for movies only or can they be used to backup ps2 games also?

My suggestion would be to look at the articles section http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/ for the information on backing up movies and then the playstation2 forum on this website for guides to backup playstation2 games.
