Smithers, Arniebear also requested the brand name of the media you used as well as the burn speed utilized.
Have you tried using ImgBurn to see if that provides a good burn? Does the disk play correctly or not in a player? Does verification blow up at the same point every time with every disk?

As Creaky alluded, Memorex, HP, and unnamed media just lead to endless problems for the most part. These are poor quality media. Media quality rankings can be found here:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm.
Note the above are listed by media manufacturer code and not by brand name. Memorex is usually CMC media which is crap. HP is Philips, CMC, etc., not good media for the most part. Taiyo Yuden is most excellent and can be purchased via the internet. Verbatim uses MCC for the most part and is great. Maxell (labeled made in Japan) is great. Even Maxell (made in Taiwan) is usually Ritek-made and pretty good. Some Fuji, TDK, and Sony media is great also. Ridata is usually pretty good. It used to be great but for whatever reason is not quite as good now. If you're buying media in the store, your best best is Verbatim, Maxell, Fuji, and Sony imho. I only buy the first two myself unless I know for sure what manfacturer was used.
Spending a few cents more per disk now will pay off in the future when you burn. Also don't burn at max speed. I limit my burning rate to 4x for the most part for a quality burn. It just isn't worth the few minutes saved.
Try some really good media and see if the problem is solved. If not, let us know.
Just to add to the confusion, I use +R media for the most so I'm most familiar with it. Branded -R media can and often does have a different manufacturer than +R media.
Another place to go is http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia. You can enter a brand name, type (+R -R), speed, etc. and get a pretty good idea who the manufacturer for that particular brand and type is.

@smithers1
Also make sure that you slow the burn speed down to insure a good quality burn. I would recommend that you not go over 4x on the burn.
Where in the process are you having the problem now. Durring the ripping or the shrink or the burn?
Keep the memosux away from the GSA 4163B - mine really like maxell!

Let me go a step further. BURN! those memorex and just rack up the lo$$ to experience. If you bury them, archaeologists will dig them up in the future and think our civilization didn't have a clue.

i think that loading the updated firmware along with tossing out the no-name DVD+R from factory direct and using hp DVD-R made the difference.
thanks again!!
p.s.
what media are you using?

Glad to hear everything worked out for you, flashing your drive helped it to recognize the newer media. Use the name brand media like Sony, Verbatim, Fuji the made in Japan and Maxell.
