Configs:

Dual Athlon MP 1800
1 GB ECC Registered Ram
WinXP Pro
PX-716A with 1.8 Firmware (supposely 16x)
Pioneer 109-BK (up to 16x as well)
Taiyo Yuden 16x Discs
TDK 16x
TDK 8x (burns at 12x)
Maxell 8x
Fuji Film 8x

I cannot burn anything faster than 8min for each disc. I set Nero to record at 16x and the buffer seems to suffer, at the begining everything seems fine and the time says 4.59min then by the middle the buffer goes down, then the timer increases and always takes 8min to burn a whole disc.

I did tests and the TYG03 DVD-R 16x discs are legit from Rima.com but can only record at 12x taking 8min per disc, if I chose 16x it takes the same 8min per disc, if chose 8x it takes the same 8min per disc.

I've also tried TDK DVD-r 16x but cannot burn anything faster than 8x per disc with that model.

I've used TDK DVD-R 8x and have been able to burn at 12x taking only 6min per disc to burn.

What is my problem? I don't understand why this happens. Any thoughts will be very welcome.

I just read on the plextor site, the pdf file of my burner says that 16x is only capable with 16x DVD+R Verbatim media.

I tried burning with an External enclosure and the Plextor drive in it using TY03 and can only burn at 8x even thoug the file says that I can burn at 12x with this type of media.

If you are burning video files movies etc. you should burn at a maximum of 4x regardless of media capabilities. Its not a race to burn DVDs but good results that will last, and readable on most standalone players. Read the threads no one burns at 16x even though new media is capable of it, too many errors in the finished product. My 2 cents anyhow.
