I'm stepping out and am a complete newbie when it comes to this. I just got a tv tuner/video capture card and would like some help converting captured tv and vhs tapes to dvd. I'm no newbie to the dvd world only the conversion process. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Mort,

Perhaps I should ask what format is it? If it is a AVI format use DivXtoDVD 1.99, and here is a guide.

Thanks sytyguy. I'll give it a try. I did get some software with the card that is suppossed to do this but I haven't had any luck with it. Hopefully things will go better with DivXtoDVD. Thanks again.

Mort,

Just of curiosity, what TV tuner/capture card did you get. I am seriously considering getting the MyHD MDP-130 my self. It does NTSC, ATSC, and QAM formats, and can output to DVD format.

Best regards,

Rich

Mort..... I converted some of my VHS tapes using Dazzle and MyDVD by Sonic. The quailtiy of the VHS tapes were crappy but it did make it to DVD! I haven't tried using it on this new computer cause I am having too much fun backing up DVDs!~

I also used Dazzle to copy my Tivo to DVD. still not High Def but not bad. Again I haven't used it since I got my new computer. DVD burning is much more fun!

sytyguy,

It's kind of a cheapy KWORLD V-STREAM TV-PVR 883 card. It was on sale at newegg for $45 with a $20 mail in rebate and free shipping so it only cost $25. I mainly got it to watch tv on my pc while I play online poker but might as well take advantage of the capture features as well. I did some more playing with it and found out I can capture the video in pretty much any format I want (mpeg 4, mpeg 2, mpeg 1, AVI, etc.) so I can capture in dvd format ready for editing or burning. Pretty nifty although once in a while I get an error saying windows needs to close and asking me if I want to report the error to microsoft. The error hasn't caused a problem with the process yet. I'm still experimenting and learning but I have managed to burn some video captured from tv to a DVD+RW.

IHoe,

I really can't tell because the sorce wasn't real good. The lower channels on the tuner aren't as clear as the upper channels and this was channel 6 (football game I was watching). I'll try it later on a better channel and let ya know.

my brother bought the same computer set up as mine. Only he needed a TV in his small appartment so he got the two tv tuner and the dell LCD TV monitor (26" wide screen) he's yet to tell me if he uses it to capture video. I have to teach him everything and is such a fuss pot!

Mort,

The card sounds kind of neat, particularly the varied output formats. Are you connecting the card to an antenna, or what?

Sounds like some fun,

Rich

sytyguy,

You plug your 75 ohm coax cable into it. It also has a fm tuner and antenna.

Mort,

Well, that makes it easy, not having to deal with an antenna.

I'm a newbie, so this may not be the correct thread, but I've come up on what I think is a new "trick" in copying VHS to DVD (especially copy-protected VHS).
It can be done without buying anything and with excellent quality, but it's kind of a pain in the ass. I use a HP Movie Writer dc-4000 but I think it also works with any HP Movie Writer model.
1. Locate the quickdvd.set file in c:\program files\arcsoft\showbiz2.
2. Open the file with wordpad.
3. Change the ProtectOn=1 to ProtectOn=0
4. Save the file with the same name and close it.
Now, you can't start Arcsoft Showbiz and expect the capture the video because it'll still show it copy-protected, but you CAN start the Hewlett Packard HP-DVD program and use the Video Transfer wizard. It will capture copy-protected VHS tapes just fine.
If you want a very high quality transfer, that can also be done, but it involves more steps. Here's how I do it.
After all the banjo work above, I start the HP-DVD video transfer wizard but I tell it the length is only HALF of what it actually is (in other words, for a 2 hour movie, I tell it the tape is only 1 hour). After the hour's worth of video is capture, I let the wizard tell me "You may now turn off your video recorder" and I do. Then I click "STOP" on the program screen. When it says, "Do you want to keep the video on your hard drive", answer "OK", give it a minute, and then exit the program.
Back up your VCR just a bit and go through the process again capturing the second half of the movie. Follow the same procedure.
What you've got now is your VHS tape split into TWO high-quality mpg files. Once you've got that done, you have several choices.
1. You can use Arcsoft Showbiz to enhance the contrast, brightness, hue, and saturation (if desired),combine them into one file, and then burn them to a DVD
OR, for the best quality,
2. Use Arcsoft Showbiz to enhance the contrast, brightness, hue, and saturation of each mpg file and burn it AS A DVD onto your hard drive giving each of them a distinct folder name (e.g., SHREK1 AND SHREK2). You'll end up with half the movie in each folder.
3. Using a free program like DVD Shrink (in re-author mode), combine the two DVDs into one. True, you won't have a menu or any extras, but you didn't have those on the VHS tape either. And come on, how hard is it to push the fast forward button?
(NOTE: Arcsoft Showbiz 2 also has a "set" file, but if you change ProtectOn=1 to ProtectOn=0, Showbiz won't allow you to continue, so forget that.)
