Ive just made an avi via Gordian Knot...i used two passes, its recorded two times?? ...why does do it twice??...the total size of the two repeated films was 710megs...??? 355megs per copy...??!ive got lots to learn with all of this but would appreciate any help with regard to ripping and recording with Gordian Knot and the theory of two passes with Divx codec...??!! thanks for help!

By the end results it sounds like maybe you used the same pass for pass 1 and pass 2. The two pass method should create a dummy file on the first pass, all it's doing as I understand it is learning the movie and what should work best for encoding. The second pass it then uses the stats from the first pass to actually encode the movie. What guide did you use and did you make sure to change the pass type between passes?

Thanks for the swift reply...well i used the Doom9 guide for Gordian...as for changing the pass im not sure?? In fact thats probbably what happened... Its the first time ive used Gordian and appreciate that its not the easiest of DVD rip packs to master....but thought i would try anyway..I used the 5.0.2 Pro codec and maybe that was configured a little wrong as well?? I manage to delete the big file(two movies!!) but one question i would like to ask is, if Knot gave me reasonable quality with one avi file(two recorded passes) of 700mb and there were two copies in the avi file then would it have been a near perfect copy if i had changed the pass!?!?!by the way how do i change the pass??!!
The problem i find being a novice in all this is that the web is saturated with rip packs and it can be confusing to know which one gives near perfect results??! anyway thanks for the helping hand really appreciated!

I just read the doom9 guide and to be honest, having never used Gordian knot before I couldn't follow the guide without more screenshots. If you want to know more about what I was meaning about using the two passes I'd look at the guide on this site, http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/dvd2divx_anamorphic.cfm . It explains the two pass method and has more and better screen shots though it isn't as automated as gknot appears to be.
