hey. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I've been having burn failures when backing up DVD's. I have a plextor px-716A and I'm using DVD shrink 3.2.0.15 and Nero 6.3.0.3. Everything had been working fine so I hadn't updated nero or checked for shrink updates. The last 2 dvd's I've tried to backup have failed on me after burning a little more than a 1/4" onto the CD multiple tries (imation 4.7G DVD 8x speed). I tried burning at 4x and 6x but same problem. 3 times it failed at that spot and once it did almost the whole DVD then failed. Here is my error log. I can't find information on that first number it shows. Anyone know what it means or see any other problems on the log?

This is one of the worst blank media types on the market. Get some Verbatim DataLife Plus, Taiyo Yuden, or Sony (mij).

That first number is the serial number for Nero, you should delete it from your post immediately.

Keep your burning at 4X, no more than. Also don't multitask, and close any unnecessary progs running in the background.

Firmware is way too old, current is 1.08. Go to http://www.plextor.com and download the firmware and flash the drive. I have this drive and you should be able to burn at 6x with no problem.

Plextor is an expensive drive, do not feed it cheap media. It likes Verbatim, Sony, Fuji or Maxell and is particularly fond of Taiyo Yuden.

Everything had been working fine so I hadn't updated nero or checked for shrink updates.
Update your Nero, it will help. Shrink no longer has updates.

Also you're burning too close to the edge. In shrink go to Edit, Preferences and select custom then set at 4300.

@benino

First of all, you need to edit your Nero serial # that starts with 1A23-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX before someone hack it from you. To edit your post again, click on the "pencil & paper" icon on the right hand in the orange bar and edit your post, then "save changes" to get out.

Thanks for your input guys. I wasn't aware that imation wasn't good media. I'll update my firmware and try again with different media. I hope that's the problem.

Hey. It's working fine now. thanks guys. I'm a little disappointed that I have to use specific brands of media in an expensive burner. I would have thought that a better burner would be more able to use any media you put in it. I've burned imation media in other less expensive burners with no problem before. Oh well. . . at least it's working now. Backed up some DVD's at 6x no problem on maxell DVDs.

Hi there,
Quote:

The idea is not that you need specific brand, it's the QUALITY we are after. And only a few of those "brands" offer quality media.

Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Maxell makes good quality media.

All the other brand names are mostly made by CMC Magnetics Inc.
They lack in quality, this is way you can find some at very cheap prices.

Cheap Price = Cheap Media

Like Memosux, oops Memorex :)

Cheap media = problems, errors, coasters, bad copies etc...

@benino - companies like Imation use widely differing quality of disc manufacturer, and buying a pack of Imation of a certain speed rating one day does not guarantee you'll get the same quality the next day, even if the pack looks exactly the same. See here for examples of what i mean -
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/232406

The example in there is mainly about Memorex but it applies to companies like Imation in exactly the same way. ps that link is from my signature
