Hey all. Long time lurker, first time poster. Great community here. I'm very happy to have afterdawn.com here for me when I need it. The guides, FAQs, etc., have really helped me in the past, and I hope you guys can help me out now.

I'm having a strange problem. When i try to create my own DVD out of some videos I have on my hard drive, it won't work. The videos include some home made videos, random funny stuff I've DLed, and other random clips of the like. I'm using NeroVision Express to try and create the DVD, everything was going well until I added chapters to this one video. I used Nero to automatically add chapters to the clip, and shortly after, the program would freeze up and become unresponsive. Sometimes I didn't even have to click anything for this to happen. I eventually got my project how I wanted it by removing the offending video then re-adding it later.

Now, no matter what project I try to burn (usually to hard drive), Nero freezes before it even starts burning. Usually it's still "transcoding streams" when it continues to work, but nothing even happens. I've let it run over 8 hours on a small project before and ntohing has ever come of it. I can't get the program to abort or close, and I usually wind up having to "End Process" from Task Manager.

I've tried rebooting a bajillion times (yes, that's a real number) after problems occur, along with restarting the project, rebuilding the project, but nothing seems to help. Let me know if I left anything out.

Here's the History log:

Have you recently added a drive and the software? Perhaps you have two different versions of Nero trying to do the job and they have a dis -agreement on how to do it. Just a thought. OEM software will only work with the drive it is purchased with. Load the wrong version for the drive you are trying to use, or Dll's start to conflict with each other...... headaches.

Might be time to set up a box to do your back-ups and have another for daily tasks. Just remember the old adage, If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Nope, no new drives. The software has been on the HD for a while. I guess I should have included the fact that I use Nero Recode and Nero Burning ROM regularly with no problems. No two different version of Nero, I've only had the one and it didn't come OEM. Although, I do have Roxio (which I rarely use anymore) and some other DVD software that came with the computer that I've never used. As far as the drives in the computer, they are the original ones that came with the system. Hmmm.... what else...

BTW, I posted this in Nero Discussion and apparently a mod moved it in here. So please, try to keep any solutions that might magically occur to you easy to understand (I'm good with computers, but not that good).

1st. Get rid of "Roxio". It does play well with other burning
programs. I don't have it but there is a program that will
available that will help you remove all traces of Roxio (Short of
re-formatting your HD). Afraid you'll have to find that on your
own. It can be found on this site.

2nd. There are a lot of drive/controller entries in your error log that
show "DMA "Off". Not good.

3rd. A complete listing of your computer's components, loaded software
and such would help. Spare no detail.

was just passing by and saw a Nero log....

- EDIT OUT your serial number - you've pasted entire Nero log, no biggie but it means the serial number is repeated throughout the post

ps for info you have entire Nero log there, if you ever want to post just the LAST section, the sections are divided via this line (as subsequent burns append to the logfile)

Nero version: 6.3.1.25
- Nero's too old, update (free) to latest 6.x version - 6.6.0.16. get 'Update-Packages 1 and 2' from here - http://www.nero.com/nero6/en/nero-up.php

Recorder: <HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4020B>Version: A105
- there are newer versions of your firmware here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1450, but i don't know which one to suggest; i've posted the link in case we ever need to update the firmware another time.

Last address to be written: 2283487 (507:26.37, 4459MB)
- 4459MB means you're burning too close to outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space

- CDRALW2K.SYS is part of Roxio; Roxio can interfere with Nero so uninstall Roxio, plus to fully remove it you may need to google search for 'Roxio Zapper'

Also - those question marks mean the ATAPI drivers aren't loaded correctly, fix via this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

Thanks for the help creaky, I was hoping you'd come to the rescue. I fixed the log, now it doesn't show my SN and is only the last entry. I'll try to get rid of Roxio and update my software and firmware. I don't know which one either, so if anyone has any leads, I'd appreciate 'em.

I don't use DVD Shrink (just DVD Decryptor, Nero Recode, and Nero Burning ROM) and I don't know why this would be an issue if I'm trying to burn to the hard drive first. I haven't even tried to burn this project to a DVD yet, just to an image first. I want to check it before it goes on media. AND with this project I'm not even using any of those programs, only NeroVision Express. Thanks again for the help.

sure...but the image you're writing to hard disc will be 4459MB, thus when it eventually goes to blank dvd it will be 4459MB ..and to edge of said disc.. there's a similart target size in Recode but i can never remember how it's altered.
