My DVD burning drive died this week. I need a replacement quickly and inexpensively. I have looked at both the Sony DRU-810A and the BenQ DW1620 and they seem like pretty decent drives.
In reading extensive reviews of them, I saw that the region code for both drive is in the firmware and can only be changed 5 times.
That concerns me a little so I want to be sure that my uses won't be affected by that condition.
I mostly use my DVD drive to copy unofficial and unpressed DVDs of all regions. Will I need to change the drive's region everytime I want to read a DVD of a different region? or do I only need to change the region when I want to write DVDs of a different region?
Is region 0 an option?
Is there any way to get around this restriction?
Will it even affect me when I use unpressed DVDs (ie: DVD-Rs with no pressed DVDs in their lineage)?

My previous drive was a Plextor PX716A and I don't know if it had the region code limitation. But I do remember setting the code when I first got it and I never changed the code or anything, but copied and wrote DVDs of many different region codes with no problems.

In all likelihood there is hacked firmware for both these burners that will disable the RPC (region protection coding) and makes the drive region-free. I own neither drive, so I can't tell you where to look. Googling will probably find it for you. Sony drives in the past have been rebadged Lite-On burners. Software, e.g. DVD Decrypter, AnyDVD handles the region protection on the DVDs themselves.

borhan, there usually is a limit of 5 RPC changes on DVD drives which is why Litey has a utility to disable it and there are hacked firmwares for others to do the same. I'm not aware of any limitation on firmware flashes other than burning out the memory with enough flashes.

usually the current Sony drives would be rebadged Lite-on's but the Sony 810A is a rebadged Benq 1640. Either way there's usually region-free firmware out there. This is quite a new drive so don't know if there's region free firmware yet (didn't find any here anyway - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=30)
