I've had decent success burning DVDs, but recently have created more & more coasters. The symptom is "freezing", and it almost always happens right at the end of the movie. First there are short, random freezes; it gets worse until it finally won't budge anymore.

This is the same spindle of blank media that was working well before.

I use AnyDVD and Nero 6 with a Lite-On burner. Nero offers me 4x and 2x; I always choose 2x. I can post more details later if need be (burner model, media brand, DVD player model, settings, etc), but I was wondering if there's a simple solution to try?

What actually casuses freezing?

sounds like it could be a media problem are you using ritek g04/g05 if not try them if you are then it could be your stand alone dvd player.

@spencsm

Can you set your target size to between 4300 and 4360? It sounds to me like you may be burning too close to the edge of the disc. This causes freezing at the end. Also as kcc76 says, the media you are using may be an issue. What media are you using?

Thanks!

I'm using Ritek 8x full-face printable -Rs (G05). I settled on these after trying quite a few different ones, but would be happy to try others.

It might be my cheep stand-alone (Yamada), but on the other hand it has been more forgiving than my laptop's drive and friends' more expensive stand-alones.

How do I set the target size to between 4300 and 4360?

(Maybe I belong on the beginner's section :)

if you use DVD Shrink, you set target size to 4300MB is Shrink's preferences..

Thank you.

Can I do the same with Recode? I think there's a setting for "Custom Size".

spencsm,
Iv'e had one of those Yamada dvd players for quite a while(its now in the spare room)
Most of time it was excellent and played anything i threw at it.
But then there were other times when it done exactly at you described with the random freezes and then will completely lock up(even with the original dvd disks). On my one if you quickly press stop then play again the movie will then play as normal for a while.
So chances are your backups could be perfectly fine, if the Yamada is the only player you have i would try taking a copy round a friends house to see if it plays ok.

If your going to have a change of media i don't think you cant beat a Verbatim or a TY.

Cheers
