Hello i am having trouble burning a movie with nero 7 using R03 Ridata blanks. I ran into this awhile ago but it seems to fix itself when burning at 2.4x instead of 4x. Now I don't even have the option of selecting 2.4x, i can only choose 4x which gives me a disk-at-once error and disk fixation error at the end of the burning process. I am using a iomega super-dvd writer 4x with newest firmware A112. I am at a loss.

I would appreiciate any help you can give me

The DMA is off for the burner. Turn it on and see what happens.

right click on My Computer -> select "Properties" -> then "Manage" -> expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> double click "Secondary IDE Channel" -> click "Advanced Settings" tab -> under Transfer Mode select "DMA if available"

also you are burning very close to the out side edge of the disc, set the target in shrink to 4300mb, which will keep you away from the edge where most errors occure
in shrink, click re-author
top left corner..click edit
at bottom click preferences
where it says..DVD-5(4.7GB) click drop down tag
click custom and change the 4464mb to 4300mb
click ok

Hi guys thanks for the help really appriciate it.

to laddyboy: i should have said it is a usb2.0 connection.

to gurnard: I'll give it a try...though i have burned a good 200 movies using 4486 with literally 6 coasters so it seems odd for it just all of a sudden become an everytime problem Also I am using CCE 2.50sp with dvd-rb as a front end after remaking it with DVDremake Pro.

I have a few blanks from the last bundle of RiDATA DVDs with gives me the option to burn at 2.4x or 4x though it would make a good burn only if burned at 2.4x.

With this new batch of R03s i can't even select 2.4x as an option.

i don't get it, if anyone knows i would apprieciate it if they could enlighten me

I suppose it's possible that Nero is corrupted. This sometimes occurred with Nero 6. Uninstall Nero, use the Nero Clean Tool (I guess it works with N7 but I don't know). Also uninstall any other burning software like Record Now, etc. DVD Devrypter and DVD Shrink are OK to keep. Restart. Do a clean install of Nero. Never install InCD; it messes stuff up. Restart. External burners sometimes have a problem with Nero. I usually solved mine by reinstalling Nero.

Have you tried burning with DVD Decrypter? If that works, the problem is probably with Nero.

i don't burn to the outer edge of discs, and i only use top quality media but still stick to 4300MB. look at the bottom of one of your discs that you've burnt at 4465MB or whatever - see how close that really is to the outer edge. but the point of not writing to outer edge is that's where the dye might not be spread/distributed evenly/correctly. (i don't know the exact ins and outs of this, suffice it to say it's just not worth the risk - 160odd Megabytes is nothing to lose out of a 4odd Gigabyte disc, very little quality has to be sacrificed.

Ok I tried burning a 4200 MB disk with the same results. I uninstall and reinstall Nero and see what happens.

Is there any chance of an incompatability between the R03 and my drive.

also any thoughts on why i can only choose 4x for my burner.

Once the blank disk is in the drive, the burning software will only denote the speeds at which writing strategies exist in the firmware for that specific media. 4X and 2.4X are typical default speeds for unrecognized media. Until the blank disk is inserted, only default speeds are available in Nero. And yes it is possible that the firmware doesn't provide for this specific media. However since it's a popular media and your firmware is UTD that seems unlikely.

Actually that many drives is not unusual if one is using virtual drives via Daeman Tools or Nero to mount iso image files.

If you rip a disk to the hard drive as an iso file, not all software players and video authoring programs will recognize and play or access the iso file on the hard drive. ISO files are 1-1 maps of the cd or dvd disk. Virtual drives use software to mount hard disk stored iso files that appear to operating systems and other software as CDs or DVDs in actual optical drives. Thus programs like WinDVD, PowerDVD, etc. can play the "mounted" iso file located on the virtual drive as if a disk was in an actual optical drive.

lol ok i am using deamon tools 3.47 fully bown ( 4 virtual drives ). actually got away from using .iso's and just have dvddecrypter dump it in its own folder.

sorry guys haven't been around to further try lately.....thought i can still post ideas.

so i am just going to start trouble shooting from the ground up.

These are 8x DVD disks and my burner is only a 4x. I don't know why this would be a problem (just in case lol).

Either my drive is done or some serious software issue. Also, I have Alcohol 120% as well but quickly looking over it i didn't seem to see how to copy the files from a folder on to a dvd-disc. Might it be worth while figuring out Alcohol 120% or is Nero the best.

whats odd is that with i cannot select the any other speed but the default 4x. I am thinking of restoring the previous firmware and see if i can get 2.4x back.

If your burner is only 4X, it may be the case your burner's firmware has no specific write strategy for this specific media (altho it can ID it) and is resorting to a default strategy which is unsatisfactory. I would probably buy 4x media from now on for this drive. Alternatively, given that NEC, Lite-On, and Benq 16x DL dual format drives can be had for $40, I'd upgrade and be done with it. If you want to keep it external buy a Bytecc or Plumax (my preference with the Prolific chipset) enclosure for $30-$40 and stick the OEM drive within.

laddyboy I agree i shoud just get a new burner. but rather not if i can still make my old one work.

So here is what i did. uploaded the old firmware and now i can burn again at 2.4x with no problem.

but i have a few new questions.

One if i burn to the edge as long as it burns and verifys ok will i have any problems down the road from doing so.

Two where can i find quality firmware for my burner...haven't really been impressed with Iomega firmware

Hi bitwriter. The reason many do not burn all the way out to the outer edge of the disk is because that is the area where the dyes used in manufacture are most likely to be defective and thinned out. Just because a disk can be burned all the way with no defects does not guarantee it will be readable one day, one year, or 100 years down he road. Although single layer disks are labeled as 4.7 gb, the user usuable area is much less, 4.464 gb. Thus edging back to 4.3 or 4.34 gb is not giving up much and is considered a safer burn.

Your drive is probably based on the LG GMA-4040B. The internal version of your drive appears to be this one. I note that they use different firmware for the external version for whatever reason. If I were in an experimental mood I would flash the drive with the internal firmware and see what happened.
