HELP sony dvd dru720a- plays dvd's no cdr??

I don't know what the deal is but I can't get this thing to work. I can play/burn dvd's but can not burn or view anything cdr. I unistalled the drivers and reinstalled..same thing.. Please help!!

What software are you using? When you click on My Computer does the name of the CD appear under the drive designator?

Have you tried using device manager to uninstall the drive and then allowing WinXP to reinstall the device upon restart? Sometimes unplugging the drive from the ribbon cable and restarting and then shutting down, plugging the drive back in, and restarting resets everything to defaults and solves problems.

Try the above. If that doesn't work and you have Nero, post the last part of your Nero History log, deleting your name and serial number before you do.

I have gone to device manager and unistalled and rebooted. I recently deleted Nero thinking the problem stemmed from there, however it obviously did not. I will try unplugging the cables.

The name of the cd only appears when a dvd is inserted, other than that nothing is recognized.

still...nothing.. just dvd's.. Anyone else have anyother suggestions? I'm tempted to just got out and buy another cd burner.

Did the drive ever read cds or is this a new drive? It sounds like the cd laser may be bad or out of adjustment. I would return the drive if new for another.
