I think the PSP that you have bought is in 1.0 version.(just the same as I am) That's because PSP v1.0 is only for Japanese.
It comes with multilanguage support. So, you don't need to worry about the language. Just simply select the first tab(an icon of a briefcase), then in the sub- category select an icon of a PSP(system setting), then choose the second icon(language).
I have one more thing to say to you. Don't ever try to update your PSP to v1.5 or 2.0, (2.5 is obviously no) if you want homebrews to work on your PSP. They work best in v1.0. So stay close with your 1.0.

You can get v1.0 only from ebay nowadays. From retail there's no chance. All japanese psp's sold now are at least v2.0.

Didn't you know that there's a stuff named as MPH Downgrader? Try it out! This downgrader downgrades any PSP with v1.51, v1.52 or v2.0 to v1.5.

If you know someone who wants a PSP this Christmas. You'd best hurry up and get 'em while the getting's good! 'cause S0NY are going to start shiping PSP to Retail at Fimware v2.5, any day now!
There're going to be some disapointed Kids (with, v2.5), this Chirstmass Season! =)
Oh well like I care! I have my v1.52 to v.1.5 and so does my Mom! I ran it by Her over the Phone. Worked like a treat! Now she can't get enough of the Fastloader. With Her new 1Gib MS. And me like the poor b*tch, that I am! could only afford to get the GiTS:SAC Game for the PSP!
Oh well I want the PSP to succeed and for that ya gotta buy the Games! besides I have the iPod for Music IT THE ONLY WAY TO GO! and the 128Mb MS is big enough to run the homebrew on my PSP as it is!

The released UMD Emulator has one special function. I think it is used to bypass the regional option. Try enabling it. (and there are some extra options)
Did you buy UMD or just download UMD ISOs from P2P networking? If you buy original UMD, you'll get dozens of problem related to regional option, cause you've bought a JAPANESE PSP.
As for me, I haven't try any UMD onto my PSP yet... Remember, Homebrews never make you feel disappointed.

Again untill I can get my Hand on, and the handover One of my UMD Games' to my Mommy (who lives in the US), I happen to be in Germany! To actually put the Money where the Mouth is, on this plexing question!
But, as I understand it, and as has been reported here, and on any other PSP News / Hacking Website on the Web. The PSP can (or should!), play any UMD Game bought anywhere in the World cappable of selling you a UMD Game for the PSP!
The problems of Region Codeing only come into effect once you start down the long, and weary path of UMD Movies. And till those things start to come down to something resembling a decent Price Point. (i.e. -10% from the normal DVD version!), S0NY can stick there UMD Movies up there PSP's!!!
