Hi there. Hope you guys can help me out.
Here's the story. I picked up an LG 4163B internal DVD burner which came with Nero Express about 6 months back. Since then I've been able to burn a couple of DVD-RW data discs, burned some old VHS home movies into DVD using DVD+R, even burned my sister-in-law's wedding vid from my video camera onto a cheap generic DVD-R that cost 12 cents...not a single problem.
Then I tried to re-burn an CD-RW, but Nero or the LG identified it as as a CD-ROM, not RW. Brand new CD-RWs, it identifies correctly. Anyway, an IT friend of mine suggested I upgrade my Nero and my firmware, which I did.
Now, I can't burn anything. I keep getting DISC-AT-ONCE errors. I been trying to figure this out for the past two weeks, but I can't.
Here's my specs. I'm running Windows XP Professional SP2. I've got an Intel Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz with 512MB RAM.
Here's the logfile from trying to burn a DVD-RW

- DMA needs to be ON. Can you try and uninstall Intel Application Accelerator as 'IdeChnDr' are the drivers for the pesky Intel Application Accelerator, and all i seem to see about that is people recommended to ditch the blessed thing.

Hi,
Sorry for the late reply, had to go mind the baby.
Ok, thanks. Will try that. I think I got a box of Verbatim DVD-Rs around here somewhere. Funny though, never had problems with these generic DVDs before.
Thanks again.

You're in good hand with Creaky now. In addition to what Creaky had mentioned, you need to a few more tweaking.

DiskPeripheral : Maxtor 2F030J0 IdeChnDr Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
DiskPeripheral : ST380011A IdeChnDr Port 0 ID 1 DMA: Off

CdRomPeripheral : SONY DVD-ROM DDU1621 IdeChnDr Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off
2 DMA drivers is Off, you need to get/turn them back to On. Try the following guide to troubleshoot and see if it'll resolved the issues.
((To enable DMA back ON by "uninstalling" it's driver ?for Win XP users?))
A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER", left click on "PROPERTIES"
B) left click on "HARDWARE", left click on "DEVICE MANAGER"
C) left click on + sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives
D) double left click on your DVD burner or your dvd-rom drive
E) left click on "DRIVER", left click on "UNINSTALL", you will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system", just click "OK", now "SHUTDOWN" or "restart" your computer
F) once you restart your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner?s drive and re-install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!!
**NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "uninstall" it from the ?IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers?
(A) left click on + sign of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
(B) double left click on either Primary or Secondary IDE Channel
(C) click on "DRIVER", "UNINSTALL", "OK" and then "shutdown" or "restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!!
**NOTE: you have to know where your "DVD Burner" or "DVD-ROM drive" is installed to what Channel. Usually it's the "Secondary IDE Channel"because your "C: drive or Hard Drive" would be the "Main aka Primary IDE Channel already". If you're not sure, then you need to check it with "Nero Toolkit" first before you "uninstall" any of them. Once you verify with Nero Toolkit, then you can continue with the above steps.
**NOTE: To verify your dvd burner/dvd-rom drivers with Nero:
Open up "StartSmart", click on "Nero Toolkit", then click on "Nero InfoTool" (InfoTool will run and retrieve all drivers), now click on "Configuration" - this should show you where your DVD Burner/DVD-ROM is installed under either Primary or Secondary (usually it's the Secondary Channel)<--- make good note of that and you're ready to "uninstall" your dvd burner/dvd-rom drivers now.

Hummhhh... what's going on here? This doesn't look good -- it should at least be like 4300MB or 4400MB (at the max with high quality media).
Quote: Media type: DVD-RW

I despise Memorex aka CMC MAG and its media. Even if you're using a Rewritable media, it's always good and recommend to use high quality media such as Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (Made In japan). My suggestion is don't use Memorex anymore.

Try to burn at 4X. Again, your dvd burner probably doesn't like the media you're using. So get other high quality media (see above reply) for your next dvd burning project.

Hi Creaky, Alkohol,
Ok. I uninstalled Intel ATA as recommended and used Nero's Control DMA Mode to turn on all the DMAs.
Tried burning using a Verbatim DVD-R. Didn't work, either. But I got a different error message this time.
Here's the logfile, could you guys have a look? Oh, and thanks again.

hmmm, all settings look correct in the log now, try 4x maybe. one of my drives won't do 8x on certain Verbatim media but i get an error at the lead-in stage everytime (different error to you though). but when i do 4x it's fine. wierd. try that and this time do a 'simulation burn' - when you go to hit 'burn', untick burn and tick simulation. this will go theu the motions with a blank disc but won't write to the disc and will provide another section of log

Your log looks clean this time. I didn't see anything wrong with it. However, it looks like it didn't like the media that's all. My only suggestion is to try another 8X DVD+R Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim and burn at 4X. Other than that your log looks good. Below is a reference from your log:

Hi. I also have a problem with DMA. I was going to post a screen shot but I can't figure out how to do it. I followed this
((To enable DMA back ON by "uninstalling" it's driver ?for Win XP users?))
**NOTE: you have to know where your "DVD Burner" or "DVD-ROM drive" is installed to what Channel. and come up with the following problem.
Primary IDE Channel
Master:MAXTOR 6L080J4
DMA off
Secondary IDE Channel
Master:SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SM-308B
DMA on
Autorun on
Slave:DVDRW DRW-2S81
DMA on
Autorun on
I have tried to change my harddrive to DMA but it will only stay in PIO Mode. Another problem is that I can't make a copy of a DVD disk I'm told that the disk I'm using is not large enough, but the disk is large enough.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

@MMethven
Well, did you "uninstall" your dvd burner's driver by a chance? And if you failed to do that, did you uninstall it's driver from IDE ATA Channel? Once you uninstall any of the above, you should "restart" your computer right away, then upon restart, Windows should automatically reinstall your driver back. Now if you check your DMA, it should reverse back to DMA if available.
Quote: Primary IDE Channel
Master:MAXTOR 6L080J4
DMA off
Well, it looks like your MAXTOR burner is on Primary IDE Channel, so you're going to have "uninstall" that one. Then restart your computer, once restart, you should be all set. Give it a shot now.

Hi guys,
I tried simulating and it worked fine, but when I tried to burn for real, I got the same error. I tried burning at 4x as well, but got the same results.
Anyway, Creaky, Alkohol, thanks for the help, if the log looks good then there's not much else you can do unless you'd like to fly down here and give it a look. hehe )
People told me that LG was a little picky about the discs it burns, but if it didn't burn everything I threw at it the first six months I would've believed them. Oh, well. I'm gonna give up on it for now, I'll try and figure out what's wrong when I have more time.
Right now, I got a stack of MiniDVs full of baby videos that my folks are demanding be turned into DVDs and all I have is a stack of burn-failed discs, so I'm just gonna throw some hard-earned cash at the problem and get myself a LiteOn, like my techie friends here are recommending.
Thanks again for the time and effort, its very much appreciated.

ah well, at least you've gone thru all the basics, a new burner is always a good step once the settings have been sorted; not trying to put you off because a lot of ppl out there are happy with Lite-on, just a heads up - if you buy a 1693S (which i think is their latest model) - don't forget to update the thread, as i've been stung by 2 faulty 1693S's recently and a few ppl round here have too. However we're the minority but it does seem there are bad batches out there..
