Hey how would I go about using my laptop as a video output for my external DVD player? What kind of cables/software would I need?

The laptop has a DVD drive built in BUT I'm living at uni and have a 5.1 surround sound DVD system so I want to play DVD's on that without having to buy a TV.

I'm pretty new to this stuff so if anyone could explain simply what to do I'd be really grateful.
