Hi

I am an independent filmmaker and needed to create a decent soundtrack within 2 weeks time. Has anyone used the Smartsound Sonicfire Pro for their productions? Is it as good as what's presented here? Seems to good to be true. Comments appreciated

Thanks

I would not recommend it. As far as professional audio editors go, its pretty far down on the quality scale. If your budget is around that price of $500, go with Pro Tools. For over a decade it had been the industry standard for audio editing/recording, studio recording, and post-prodcution mixing. For under $500 you can get an MBOX, which is a USB 1.1 powered audio hardware by Digidesign (maker of Pro Tools.) It features two channels in/out of 48k 24 bit audio with SPDIF and focusrite mic preamps. And it comes with Pro Tools LE which can have up to 32 tracks of audio, and 99 tracks of midi. I currently use version 6.4, but 7.1 has just been released, however I'm not sure if it is being distributed yet.

If you are serious about your film making, and you want your audio to turn out as good as your video, Pro Tools is probably the best investment you can make, and with packages starting at under $500 its a damn good bargain.

Other good pro editors are Cubase, Logic (mac only) and Reason. But only Pro Tools uses its own proprietary hardware. Just some other options for you, but Pro Tools is by far the best.

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:
