I know a lot of people hear swear by dvd+r's because you can booktype them which supposedly makes them more compatible with more dvd players and so forth.But has any actually made a dvd-r & tried to play it in a player & it didnt work..but then made a dvd+r (booktyped) and it worked for them.I've heard of playstation and gaming systems only liking dvd-r's.I just would like to know of some actual people having more sucess with dvd+r's...as in before & afters???

None of my standalone dvd players (4 in total) will play a +R DL without booktyping as a DVD-ROM. None will play a -R DL. All will play a +R or -R without booktyping however.

My old player doesn't want to read dvd+r's so I booktype them. Play great then.

It may be a thick question but what is booktyping and how do you do it?

movies27,

I've been changing the booktype of DVD+R to dvd-rom for 1 1/5 years now. *Haven't come across anything they wouldn't play in. That goes for Playstation2 and Xbox. The majority of dvd players/systems would not play dvd +R to begin with.

*A few TITLES did not play in some Sony or Toshiba drives....nothing to do with booktype. They were titles a lot of people had problems with in regards to title and Sony, Toshiba drives.

@pazzini

Booktyping is changing the bitset of a DVD+R to that of a DVD-ROM which is the standard DVD movie format. It fools the players into thinking that the duplicate is a DVD-ROM movie and then they will play them.

Some players do not like the DVD+R format and won't recognize them. Changing the bitset fixes that issue. Not all burners will allow bitset change though.

There are several threads at the forum regarding this. If you read through them you will get a clearer picture.

My stepfather has a player that won't play ANY homemade dvds (+R or -R)
I booktyped a +R disc, and it played flawlessly!
So, yes.............. it really makes a difference.

BTW..........
If you use a dvd identifier, a store bought movie will show up as a DVD Rom.

Good choice movies27. I don't think you will be sorry. My brother has a fancy JVC set top player that would skip with DVD-R and DVD+R media but plays DVD+R booktyped dvd-rom no prob. My set top player will play anything. I've almost forgot how to burn without booktyping it dvd-rom. My drives are set to booktype DVD+R media to dvd-rom automatically and all I buy is DVD+R media.
