Ok lads I have a Sony Hi8 and have just bought a Sony HC19e DV. I want to get the Hi tapes to the PC and then DVD.

Whats the best route to go,

1. Get a video capture card for the PC and dump the VHS direct into it from the camera
2. My DV camera will accept a firewire import so is there a converter out there from standard 3 plug out from the Hi8 to the fire wire ?

Once its on the PC I can go from there....

UK PAL by the way as well

Thanks for the help lads :)

I just found a great little device on Ebay which is an analog to usb converter with basic software for video capture and dvd burning its called

Kworld xpert dvd maker for USB 2 costs about £30.

Hope this helps someone else :)

If your DV Camcorder has a Analogue Input then you could use the DV Camcorder to directly Transfer the Analogue Hi8 Video directly to your PC which would be "MUCH" Better than useing one of those Crappy assed USB Capture devices which i hope to god you didn"t buy as the One you are Looking at Is a Terrorable Device and the quality will be Horrorable......

I think you would be better off First Trying to see if your Camcorder has analogue Inputs then you can trancser the Hi8 video and any VHS Meterial to your PC with Pretty good Quality..

Failing that I would suggest that if you are going to buy an analogue Capture device get an Internal PCI Card or of you have to get a USB Capture device get one that uses Hardware Compression because Even USB 2.0 doesn"t have enough Bandwidth to efficiently transfer Uncompressed Video/Audio to your PC without there being some Signal Loss which will result in Lowered Quality and Possibly Dropped Frames and Sync problems....

You can get a Cheap Internal PCI Capture Card for about $30 US or cheaper if you Look On e-bay but try to get one with a 10 Bit decoder Chip.....

Minion, alas no analog input into my minidv. I haven't got many Hi8's to sort so I'm going to give this usb a go. If its no good it will go back on ebay for someone else to buy. I understand about the band width and I will be firewire transfering from the DV.

Thanks for getting back....

You know for the Same price or even cheaper you can get a PCI Capture Card that will capture better quality without Frame drops, I got one On EBay last year for only $30 US.....
