I recently bought a spindle of Sony DVD-R's that show up as CD-R'S!!

After some research, I believe it is either my firmware, or bad media.

I have an NEC DVD+-RW ND 1300A Burner. This came with my e-machine so I assume it is an OEM version. Firmware version is [FW 1.05] I went to the NEC homepage, and it states that firmware updates will not work on OEM versions of their hardware. Is this true?

Any suggestions?

Below is the dvd identifier log...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:SONY08D1]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [Sony Recording Media Co.]
Manufacturer ID : [SONY08D1]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]

JXP2307,
According to your dvd identifier log, it is sony dvd alright.
One thing I dont really understand is that what do you mean by sony dvd r that show up as cd r?
In what circumstances that sony dvd show as cdr ?
What kind of software that you are using? I only came across when my dvd writer has lost it life span it only read cdr instead of dvd.
By the way, how old is your nec dvd writer?
Maybe it's time for you to change your dvd burner.

My burner is about 2 to 3 years old. I am not sure. The computer was a gift from my brother about a year ago. I am not sure how long he had it.

It reads it as a cd-r when first inserted into my burner. It auto runs like all discs do, and says "Blank CD, What do you wish to do?" It then lists a bunch of programs I can do things to CD's with.

It SHOULD say "Blank DVD." I have a stack of Verbatim, and it reads them just fine. Is my firmware out of date?

Is there truth to firmware not helping OEM versions of NEC's burners??

- that firmware is real old; if you haven't touched the firmware previously, then the latest version of firmware (1.0C) for your drive is here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1517

CREAKY!!

Thanks for the advice.

I flashed to firmware version 1.0B and it recognized my sonys. I am thrilled.

About the ATAPI, bbmayo's guide said to go to the chipsets manufacturer site to obtain the updates. I went to Intel, And it said "Incompatible Hardware."

I have an
Intel 82801DB Ultra ATA storage Controller - 24 CB

Any help updating this is appreiciated.

THanks!!

As stated above the current, latest firmware is 1.0C
Why did you use 1.0B ? On a burner this old, would use the latest firmware as it most likey won't be updated anymore.

Because I guess I can't read... lol

I downloaded the wrong one. Will re-flash when I get home.

Thanks for pointing that out...

Any ideas on the ATAPI drivers?

Thanks to All.

Even with updated firmware, it it still out of date. However this 4X burner should be able to use most 4X or 8X media. Would avoid 16X media as firmware unlikely to address and can't take advantage of the extra speed anyway.
I actually have this TDK burner (rebadged NEC 1300A) on my computer at work. I paid $200 for it when new, so you can tell how old it is. It has been very reliable and accepts almost all media.
