After being puzzled as to why so much hard disk space was being lost I came to the conclusion that it must be the files are getting bigger when I add artwork embedded into the MP3 file. Can anyone confirm this?

most pictures are pretty small though, it only adds maybe 20k to the entire filesize

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:
