hi, my first post here. I've had my dvd writer about 3 months and had no problems until about a month ago. First thing was nerovision express would freeze up during transcoding of avis, mpegs, divx etc so recently i got a host of other dvd suites such as dvdlab, ulead dvd suite and sonic dvdit to see if they'd cope any better... I've deleted them all again and only have nero left but now i get an "illegal disc" error. From reading about the forums this seems to occur with dodgy dvds, i was using tesco ones (successfully til last week) and figured that was the problem but today i got verbatim datalifeplus ones and still get the same error message. can anyone help?
here's my log...

oh, you're from UK too. it's a while since i've priced up memory but i'd have a look on www.ebuyer.co.uk and overclockers.co.uk too as i always find pc world are far too expensive.
edit- just re-read your first post and noticed the Tesco's bit otherwise i'd have known you were in UK. sorry i usually ignore write-ups and dive straight in to the logfiles :)

how about this ram for £27
I know very little about the inner workings of the computer though. I installed my dvd r driver and a cd drive but apart from that i dunno any more. Is there a standard ram port thats the same in every computer or do i need to find out what type of ram my computer takes

do you know what model motherboard you have ?
maybe this will help to identify it if you don't know; am thinking of ways to work out what memory you got now and what to get - http://www.hwinfo.com
Another way is when booting up, the motherboard details are usually displayed on screen, but you'd probably have to pause the bootup to catch the details

a-ha, nice find, must admit i haven't mooched too much into that proggy yet, i just use it in the summer to keep an eye on temperature.
i'd not noticed that before, on this pc it's correctly identified my memory, that 128MB is in one slot, and 64MB is in the other. cool...

maybe try ebuyer, i think they do free postage on memory. PC2100 must be the type you need then, though i guess it depends if buying one 256MB stick of memory to match your current one will be enough, ie i'm wary of recommending you buy astick of memory in case you only have one spare slot free and therefore can't update again another time without having to take out the 2x 256MB modules... (if you wanted to go above 512MB that is; saying that it depends how new your motherboard is anyway, as to how much memory it can take)

hey, I'd installed all the upgrades and new drivers and was about to test Nero again when windows installed new upgrades and something happened and i got an error message saying some of nero's files were missing. I reinstalled again and redid the drivers and upgrades (as far as i can tell) and tried to burn a data dvd, Nero stopped responding after it got to 1%. The error message was something like
scsi/apti failed to commence but because Nero wouldnt respond i couldnt retrieve the log. any advice?

yeah, don't worry, the logfile is always in the same place, hence i keep this bit of text for replying to posts....
...let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.
You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

that's the same exact log section as before... have you tried any of my suggestions ?. if so, you can test out any changes without wasting discs by doing 'simulation burns'. when you go to hit 'burn', untick 'burn' and tick 'simulation' - this'll go thru the motions with a blank disc but doesn't write to the disc, then you get another section of logfile appended to the logfile you just posted..

cool, looks good. however you're gonna have to keep an eye on the memory until you buy some more, and maybe drop to 4x for now.
nice one, happy burning!

no worries, drop by if you need more help with the memory upgrade, but either way keep us posted on the progress of the burns, but you should be ok. just don't buy any media you're not sure of, stick to those nice Verbatim's, very nice disks indeed
