Try running defrag on it to see if there are any corrupted sectors. That's the first step I'd take.

If you have Windows go to Prgrams>Accessories>System Tools>Defrag. Think of your disk as a grid with millions of squares on it. When you copy information onto the disk it gets stored in different those sqaures on that grid. Eventually the little squares can become very unorganized and information takes longer to access because it's become spread around on that grid instead of clumped together. Defrag basically reorganizes and arranges them how they should be and if there are any that have gone bad it will isolate them and tell you. You should run Defrag on your hard drive occasionally also. It doesn't necessarily solve all your problems, but will help your system run a little more smoothly.

wow, thanks alot styll. but unfortunately i dont believe it corrected the problem. is it possible i "deleted" the free space? because its a 512 megabyte sd, but it says the maximum it can hold is 468, and i remember it saying 512

Part of it probably has to do with the difference between megabits and megabytes. My 1gig Memory Stick Pro has a capacity of 1,016,791,040 bytes. That transfers to 969 megabits of actual storage space. Check out this explanation page and it will help explain the difference between bits and bytes:
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/bytes4.htm Still, you shouldn't be losing that much space from the translation. Are you sure there aren't any hidden files on the disk? Go to Control Panel>Folder Options and check the "View" tab on top. Then there should be an option in that list where you can choose to view hidden folders or not view hidden folders. Check the option to view them and then go look on you memory stick and see if there's anything extra.

I did, and all i came up with was 2 files that were read only called mstk_pro.ind and memstick.ind. that couldnt possibly be the problem, so i deleted it anyway and nothing still happened...uh oh...

To I'd call this a case of Technical Advertising...cause I was pulling out my hair to figure out the same thing a while back but here's what I found out.
"Note that "512MB" and "1GB" memory cards don't actually have 512MB and 1GB of software storage capacity respectively. Cards marketed as "512MB" actually only have 468MB of usable memory and "1GB" cards only have 969MB due to formatting overhead and differing definitions of what "megabyte" actually means. According to the storage manufacturer a MB is 1,000,000 bytes, but for software, a MB is 1,048,576 bytes. Don't be surprised when you can't fit that 500MB movie onto your 512MB card."

Yeah I know...I thought I smoked something cause I was sure it read that amount too....and nothing I did could get it to read 512MB. But that's what they say, even other people I've spoken to who had 512 or higher said it's less.
Like I said Technical Advertising.

I don't understand it 100% either. If it's advertised as 512megabits, why can't they squueze the extra bytees into the card that it would take to make it actually hold 512 megs?

It's something to do with the calculations or sorta crap, so that's why I said it was Technical rather than false...
Cause the 32MB card it comes with reads as 30MB, I wish all the cards could have had this little memory taken away. Cause I seriously thought something was wrong with the card, 467MB is a huge loss from 512MB to me...especially just after you converted a movie to look at on the PSP and it's 500MB
