Hey guys been lurking for awhile and have gained quite a bit of knowledge from this site and hope to be able to share in the upcoming months.
My problem is using a Plextor 176-updated firmware btw, DVD shrink with dual layer dvd's, they freeze up in my stand alone dvd player but play fine in my cpu, I've used dvd shrink countless times with single layer without a hitch but when I switch it to do dl discs it just makes coasters(or unless I want to watch the movies on my cpu...) On a side note I used the dvd fab trial to do some dl discs and it worked fine on the same setup. If anyone can tell me what I'm doing wrong or recommend a free program to do dl discs I'd greatly appreciate it.
Try DVD Decrypter or IMGBurn. Both are free progs. DVD Decrypter can rip and burn, though it is no longer being updated so it can not handle some newer encryptions. You shouldn't even be using DVD Shrink for DL burning, shrink is a compressor, it compresses DVD-9's so that you can put the content on a DVD-5.
Do you mean a Plextor 716 because this the drive I have and you should have not problem with dual layer and burning. Do not use Shrink for DL burning. If you had good luck with DVD Fab fine, but it is a pay program. As suggested try DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn both will do DL's fine and they are free. Here is a guide
@marobru hi :)
as Loco and Arnie have said goes for me too (hi guys):)
i've had great success with DVD Decrypter in write and then read mode, with DVD43 running in the back ground. for all my D/Ls.
from what i can see Imageburn is Decrypter without the encoder, so why bother to change apt's in the middle of the process when you can complete the whole process with the one apt.
if as i do, you have all your movies on removable HDDs. Imageburn is ideal for selecting the file you want, then a straight burn
Thanks for all the replies, I'll try these out when I get home tonight. I DVD Shrink is for compressing a dvd but it does have the option to burn to a DVD-9 so I thought it could be used for both??
Arniebear, yep it is the 716, just got in a hurry typing.
Yes it does have that option but you really do not want to burn with Nero, and since you would then have use Decrypter to burn you may as well use it to do the whole thing. Decrypter or Imgburn handle the transition the best that I have seen, and since I use my Plex to burn DL's this is the method I use, burning at 2.4X with Verbatim and no problems with playback, plus the Plex booktypes so it can be played on all players. I have an older Toshiba that only plays -R disks and is picky, I test my burns on it and using this method I get great playback.
