Simply go to http://www.yourpsp.com and choose your region.
After doing this, download a Manual for PSP v2.0 from manuals section.
Check through the manual and you should be able to know most of these stuffs.

Tell me which part of....
"You will need to have an 802.11 standerd Wire~less~ Router to use the Networking Functions (i.e. Internet), of your PSP?"!
Don't you seem to understand?!?!
BTW: Updateing your PSP? to Firmware v2.50 is also a must for you to get Internet on your PSP?!

Whew...
In order to connect to the Internet using your PSP, all you need is a PSP (any version), a wireless router, a PC (optional) and also a power souce!
For PSP v1.5, use PSPCrazy Web Browser or Fried Up Browser (quite hard to find both of them...) to browse the Internet.
For PSP v2.0 or higher, you don't need to worry much about this, cuz it has a build-in Web Browser for these versions... ...
About the connection, read the Manual from http://www.yourpsp.com. Detect the router by setting up your PSP. In Settings menu, choose Network Setting, then click Infrastructure mode, then config your setting. I think you should scan for a SSID first, to make sure that the router is functioning...
I don't know much about this... As I do not have any router... How sad...
If you Google this question, you should be able to know more than this... /heh

There is no need to update your PSP unless you want to use the actual Sony installed browser and you don't care about homebrew apps. I'm using the Wipeout in-game browser and it works great @ home and @ school. You'll find tons of tutorials in the forums here, just do a quick search. But don't update needlessly, that would be a shame.

My son has a psp and I think he has the O/S upgraded to 2.5. We do NOT have wireless at home but rather DSL to the computers. I can add a USB to a computer.
So how does he use or connect to the internet to download stuff such as wallpapers, music, games, etc?
Why is it that he HAS to use wireless to upgrade the O/S? Why wouldnt USB work?
thx

OP = Origianl Poster.
And that Jerk doesn't deserve Homebrew! If he can't understand what it means when a Dozen People tell him the same thing. And in as friendly a way possible to do a google search. Should he have had additional questions about this topic.
Then how can we trust that he won't brick his own PSP? in a random act of stupidity! Granted I don't expect the Guy to listion to me. Which is anouther reasion why I keep suggesting that he just update to v2.50 and then we can say good riddence to him!

@ddwebb
I'm sorry to hear about you having the v2.50 Update. Allthough it would be lame of me to say so. I wouldn't sweat it to much. Yes Homebrew is fun. but the Real v2.0 Web Browser is more fun. And besides sooner or latter almost everyone here will have to say goodbye to v1.50. As all the "Cool Games!" SOCOM, GTA:LCS et-al will be v2.0+ ONLY.
Now as for your Wallpaper, Music and Movies. Yes you can most certanly use your USBx.x Cable (say from a Digital Camera), to trasfer Data to and from your PSP?. There no problem in that! However you will not be able to surf the Web this way as that as of the current Firmware was not designed to work like this.
Sadly if your looking to get online with your PSP your going to need a Wireless Router, at the least a Wireless Acess Point that you can connect your PSP? to your DSL MODEM / Router though what is called an Infastrucure Mode.
All I can tell you is that you shuldn't bother to waste your Money on a Wireless PCI Card. In the thinking that you can possibly use this with ICS in a XBOX? style NIC2NIC Configuration. As that will only give you an Ad-Hoc Connection, and well that's no use to anyone!
You're going to have to invest the $50.00 ~ $99.00(USD), is a WLAN Router if you have any intentions of useing the PSP? as an Internet Device.

Thanks Ichijoe.
So what do I have to do to work with a USB cable to download stuff to his PSP?
Does it act like a drive on the computer and you download files, bmp and mp3 and such to that drive?
Now I assume that if he has the default card with the psp, I believe it is 32mb, then he is limited to what he can download until Santa brings him something different.
I've connected many peripherals to computers so I assume it acts like that?
When I connect my digital camera to my computer, it connects as a drive letter and I can then copy or move the pictures off of the digital camera. But here I am doing the reverse. Is that correct?
Than once the files are there such as wallpaper, how does he access those files and use them?

Yep it basicly works like a Thumbdrive.
Ya just need to know that:
Movies: (*.mp4 & H.264) go into the MP_ROOT Folder.
Games: Such as can be played on a 2.0+ go into the PSP\GAMES Folder
Pictures Of any varity go into the PSP\PHOTO Folder and...
Music: Mp3's, AAC (non iTMS) and ATRAC go into the PSP\MUSIC Folder.
That's about all there is to it really.
In the Case of v1.50 Emus, Homebrews etc., would also be placed in the PSP\GAMES Folder.
Again sadly there is no way to access the Net though a PSP this way. At least no one has figured it out yet. =(
But, if you had a big enough Memstick you could theroreticaly save the File(s), from the 'net directly to the PSP?. Granted that the PSP? is connected and that you point the File to save itself on the PSP?.

Thanks. I plan on messing around with it a little so that I am comfortable doing it and then teaching my son how to do it.
Does anybody worry about virus's being downloaded to the PSP?
I assume that I might want to copy it to my PC and have my virus software test it before uploading to the PSP.
Are there any idiot instructions in laymans terms on how to do this? The manual for the PSP is not great in understanding this. I have seen on these pages regarding yourpsp.com. I cant access it from work so I have no idea what this site provides.

At this time there's only one known 'Virus' / 'Torjan' for the PSP? and that really depends on how you look at it. As this Malware depends on the Overflow.tif File in order to execute itself. I guess I could analogize this as like haveing a Gun. And the Satelite Files (h.bin & index.dat) as beeing akin to the Ammo. The Gun is harmless in and of itself. That is untill you load it and pull the trgger.
Basicly this so called Virus and the fact that most AV Software will now incorrectly brand the 'overflow.tif' as a Virus. Is do to some loose with no life who had to go and fuxx it up for a few People.
When uses properly these File will cause a v2.0 PSP? to be misread as a v1.0 PSP?. The upshoot beeing that you could, then update (i.e. downgrade), back to PSP? v1.50. To run Homebrew and Game Backups, in the PSP? v1.5x generation.
Since SOCOM & GTA are in the v2.x Generation these Games will not load up with a PSP that has v1.50 on it. Firmware changer(s), or no. Given that we're at the begining of the PSPs'? usefull life it's safe to say that anyone who still has a v1.50 is only living on borroed time. With roumers goin' round that S0NY are due to releaes a version 3.0 Firmware before the end of this Year. I belive I read something about December the Twelfth as a possible Date, for realease...

Actually the Wireless Router should also be an Access Point. An Access Point (or Repeater), is only needed if you wish to use your Wireless Device (i.e. PSP? or Laptop), outside of the mormal Range (i.e. Distance), of your Router. On average this is about ca. Eleven Meters (or so), in Diameter....
But, yes this is what you goaing to need in order to use your Devices...
