I tried but I couldn't do it.
other programs tell me it is an avi file. but using tmpenc it tells me an unsupported format and I cannot encode...
where do I begin to figure this out???

audio is probably compressed.

Get VirtualDUB - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/virtualdub.cfm

open the avi in it and do the folowing

1, click video and select direct stream copy
2, click audio and select full processing mode
3, click audio agai and click compression. Select No Compression PCM and click OK
4, Click file - save as avi.

The file saved will be larger than the original but TMPGEnc should have no problems with it!

took me so much longer to try the proposed solution. I got larger files after using virtual dub and though I was on my way. but TMPGE would still not recognize my AVi file. The movie has two different files a wav fil and an avi file...could this make any difference? The audio section of TMPGE recognizes the avi...but not the video..any more ideas???

I read in another starin where you said to download codexs before using Virtual dub...is this necessary??/ everything seemed to work OK. I did not get to see any video in virtual dub...
If the movie plays OK on some players could I ahve downloaded a fake movie???
this is so not important but when I run into a snag I want to figure it out before I give up,,obviously I cculd buy another copy of the movie and probably will but this is a learning process for when it may matter on some home videos I want to do the same thing to.

Its got a wav and an avi?? did you extract the wav with VirtualDUB or something??

You need to download codecs for divx/xvid yes!

DivX ;-) MPEG4 Codec release 3.11 alpha
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/divx_3_codec.cfm

DivX Pro
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_encoders/divx_pro_for_windows.cfm

xVid
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/xvid.cfm

AC3Filter v0.63b
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/ac3filter.cfm

Gspot
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/gspot.cfm
This program will tell you what codecs are needed for the file!!

Also in TMPGEnc try doing the following, click option - environmental settings. click the vfapi plug-in tab and right directshow file reader and give it a higher priority until it's at the top of the list!
